Visiting Harlem

Anonymous
My family and I are doing a day trip into NYC next week and I'd like to take them to Alexander Hamilton's house. I believe it's in Harlem, I've never ventured north past Central Park and am guessing that the safety reputation that beleaguered areas such as Harlem and the Bronx are as outdated as other areas in NYC which have seen a large turnaround since the 70s and 80s. True?

You’ll be fine. It’s a much safer city everywhere than it was in the 70s and 80s. There are even - gasp - some white People who live in Harlem now!

Correct. You will be totally fine. Although that would have been true in the 70s and 80s also, at least during the day.

This is correct. I lived in Harlem for 10 years and I never came into direct contact with crime other than having my car broken into. As in any big city you will want to keep your guard up and protect your belongings. Be very smart and aware at all times.

The Alexander Hamilton House is located in Saint Nicholas Park. You will want to catch the C train to 135th Street Station and go out of the north end exit. Turn and walk up the hill. If it is a Sunday and they are doing track work then you will need to catch the A train to 145th Street and walk back toward City College (just ask the locals). You can also catch the IRT and get off at City College station then walk east. While you are in the area I suggest you go farther north and check out the Morris-Jumel Mansion. If you get to the Bronx you should check out the Bartow-Pell Mansion. Have fun! I wish I could be your tour guide!

Don't forget to hit 125th Street for the vibrant street culture and shopping. Stop into Marcus Samuelsson's Red Rooster on a Monday night for live music. Enjoy!

Whatever you do, don't go east towards the Metro North station. I lived in questionable parts of NYC for years, but I was horrified when I went there to catch the train this Thanksgiving. On 125th near the trendy stuff is fine.

You live in DC, and you're asking if Harlem NY is dangerous??

Lol gtfoh

I have never had a problem at or near the Metro-North station.

Walk through the CCNY campus. It's small, but has some beautiful architecture (ignore the 80's buildings, lol).
Also, Hamilton's house was moved from it's original location a few years back. It's amazing how they did it, check out the youtube videos (and be sure to look at the "ghost" outline of the house in its old/original location).

we went to Hamilton Grange a few months ago--the neighborhood was fine, the video they showed about how they moved the house was fascinating, and we walked through St. Nicholas Park afterwards, then down to Columbia University and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine (so lovely) and into Central Park. It was great and we felt totally safe the whole time. NYC is way safer than DC.

+1 - there's an Old Navy and TJ Maxx there now!

I visited Harlem this summer. It was an enjoyable walk past the Apollo Theater, St. John Cathedral, I got a Levain bakery cookie, and just generally took in the rapid gentrification. There was a Whole Foods...felt very comfortable
