Carmax

Is it worth bringing a 16 year old car with LT 100K miles on it to CarMax for an appraisal? My other option is donating it. I know CarMax can offer more than a dealer but I am wondering if they have any interest in a very old car. It runs well but has a collection of minor issues.

They'll buy anything. Older cars that they don't want to sell to customers, they'll sell to third parties.

They are a dealer, and will hit you at below wholesale.

Yeah, why not - it's a no obligation offer.

Also, why is the only other option donating it? You don't want to hassle with selling it? A 16 year old car with 100K miles wouldn't be that hard to sell at the right price. Low mileage.

Assuming it's been well maintained that's a prime candidate to sell on your own. CarMax will buy it for auction. There are plenty of sites out there to estimate sale or trade value . You'll get what $200 if you donate?

Not interested in putting the time in to sell on my own. Maintenance records are spotty. Lots of minor quirks. Thanks for the feedback.

If you donate you don't get the full amount, you just get a tax write off.

Like all donations..correct!

Take it there and then take it to a regular dealership. You will see Carmax is a huge difference.

I took in my 2001 Toyota Camry with a tank of water in the trunk, with over 100k miles. They gave me $3k. I also took that same car to a regular dealership and they offered me $500.

You can get more top dollar selling it yourself but it takes effort and you have to deal with the wierdos. CarMax is pretty fair on pricing...

Yes, but you'd be amazed at the people who don't understand this. They think $500 from Carmax and a $500 donation are the same.

You can't hurt anything by taking it for an appraisal. Once you have the numbers then make a decision.

Report back if you do sell it. I have a Honda in similar condition. It has some cosmetic issues, but runs great. We've gotten regular maintenance and no quirks at all. It's just old!

I'm curious what I could get for it because we're thinking of upgrading to a newer car.

I will report back..
