Meghan and Kate Frenemies or BFFs?

I find Lainey's new piece about these two fascinating. The two most successful gold/status diggers of our time. I wonder how they will deal with each other...

Partners in crime undoubtably. My SIL and I are the same.

They gain nothing by competing with each other. Kate is clearly the higher status, per the heredity structure of the monarchy. There is NOTHING Meghan can do to change that. Meghan obviously faced higher hurdles to attain her place than Kate - she's biracial, from a middle class background, didn't attend the "right" schools, and is American.

Kate has the grace, Meghan has the hustle. I vote: formidable alliance to protect their families and husbands.

I would love it if they became best friends, but I don’t know if Kate is secure enough to not feel competitive. They would complement each other well and Megan could give Kate fashion tips. It’s usually insecurity or crazy that torpedos in-law relationships.

This is clearly drivel. I'm not trying to be a Meghan super-fan because I think both women are excellent matches for their respective mates will serve different functions within the monarchy.

But there isn't anything in their backgrounds that is remarkably different: both of them come from middle class families. Kate's parents were flight attendants before they started their party planning business, so aren't clearly more educated or further up the food chain than Meghan, whose father was lighting director/director of photography in Hollywood - probably a skilled position. Her mother is a counselor. I guess Kate is English and white, so there is that but the royal family isn't particular about nationality, see i.e., Prince Phillip plus all their German blood.

Plus, this idea that somehow Kate has had an easier time is strange - she changed her enrollment from Edinburgh to St. Andrews in the sheer hope of catching William's eye. She waited for 10 years waiting for him without developing her own career or foothold. She hustled for him. So did Meghan but before that she graduated from Northwestern, nothing to sneeze at, became a series regular on a long-running cable t.v. show and then got involved in advocacy and charitable work well before she met Harry.

They both have hustle. I agree Kate has grace. Meghan has charisma.

I love it. I think whether or not they’re ever incredibly close, I think they’ll be on the same team. And more importantly, they’ll never let us know that they are close. So it doesn’t/shouldn’t matter to us on the bottom rung.

They will reveal very little about the nature of their friendship, because the less they give the less there is to talk about. The more they share, the more there is to read into. It’s like that for every single royal relationship, sisterhood, brotherhood, parenthood etc. A few exceptions but very controlled, and how would we know the reality anyway? And last, even if we did know the reality, it’s a whole different world for them. They have hundreds of cousin and uncle types, they live in a fancy and well protected sort of sad bubble. Their life is nothing like we can imagine.

PP here:
My comment had nothing to do with their backgrounds, ethnicity, or demeanor. My comment was purely factual - Kate is the wife to the man 2nd in line to the throne and mother to the children 3rd and 4th in line. She maintains a higher status within the Royal Family structure, along with her children, than Prince Harry and soon-to-be Duchess Meghan.

In fact, Meghan will be required to "present" herself to George and Charlotte at her wedding. Why? Because they are her seniors.

Higher status within royal family structure doesn't automatically translate into higher status period. Sure if you are on margins your status is low but this is a different sitaution. Meghan's husband is hotter than Kate's and she is just overall more attractive and more successful. After all she was a celeb way before she met Harry (unlike Kate).

I’ve never heard that Kate went through that to meet her prince, wow. Is that really true, or embellished? C’mon.

NP here. You are not getting what the clearly intelligent PP said. The family status impacts all relationships. Hopefully it will not impede K and M too much day to day in normal interactionsa but it is there and it is fact. Wasn't there all kinds of hubub about curtseying to Camilla?

I think it's pretty clear that Meghan will present more of the "celebrity" and glamorous side of the Royal family moving into the future. Meanwhile, Kate will be THE primary female face of the Royal Family after the death of the current Queen. It's a much more serious role than what Meghan will face.

Basically, Kate and Meghan together are appropriating different aspects of Princess Di's personality. It's taking two of them to fill the massive void left by Diana. That said, Kate will clearly be more powerful within the palace halls and be treated as such by the media.

Both will continue to be on the A+ list.

I think that they are just getting to know each other and we should let them!
Anonymous
I doubt they are either. I'm sure they will get along fine. They have no reason not to.
Anonymous
I think that they will get along when they see each other which will be about as often as most SILs do.

I think that Kate and Meghan are both content with their own lives and wouldn't want to switch places with each other. That'll make it easier for them to be fond of one another.

This is what I think. My SIL is like my sister. Meghan and Kate can confide in each other about the pressures/duties or being married to royalty. They could be Diana/Sarah 2.0.
