| I watched the Sons of Anarchy series on Netflix. I just saw the Brawl in Cell Block 99 movie. Boy, prison sure looks tough. It makes me want to work harder to stay out. Some psycho wardens and guards, man. |
| I suggest watching the Netflix documentary “13” for the reality of where we are as a country re: mass incarceration. |
|
Depends on the facility. Some are nice and some a dumps. A supermax can be terrible but lower level facilities are not bad.
It’s not like the movies, people aren’t stabbing and fighting all the time. It’s more rape than anything. |
| Probably grimmer. |
This. A friend’s grandson is in prison. He says it is no worse than some schools and foster homes he experienced. He’s getting his GED and working the 12 steps. With a few exceptions, he’s been able to keep his head down. Luckily, he’s a minority not represented by gangs in his facility so he isn’t caught up in those conflicts. |
| Is it really that much work to stay out of prison? I mean, really? Just don't do anything illegal. |
This. If I ever had to go to jail, I'd want to go to jail in Montgomery County. I've worked in jails. There's definitely a difference depending on the culture of the management. And private prisons are the worst. |
This sounds more like jail, not prison. I know a preppy white boy who went. He will not talk about it, ever. I can only assume that it was not a pleasant experience. |
| OP, have you or a loved one ever been a victim of a felony crime? What kind of conditions do you want for the person that did that to you/your loved one? |
| If you’re interested, there’s a series on TV called “Locked Up”. |
|
very stinky
I've worked in 2 |
| Beyond the facility itself, I think the reality of being locked up is itself pretty damn grim. |

I don’t tell people IRL this but my cousin is at Red Onion in Virginia, that’s a supermax state prison, the most severe that they get. Jesse Matthews and Lee Malvo are there. It also is almost entirely for isolation and for prisoners who got in trouble in other prisons (so it is the prison system’s prison, hope that makes sense). Anyway, HBO released a fascinating documentary on Red Onion earlier this year called Solitary, it’s intense, but gives you a great inside view of life in prison.

Why is your cousin there? |
I don’t know why he ended up at Red Onion, he must have been involved in a violent altercation at another prison. Even though DCUM is anonymous, I won’t disclose what he initially did to be incarcerated as it was a regionally famous case that had tons of publicity and my family received lots of harasssments and death threats. It’s one of the reasons I moved here to get away from it. But I can tell you he’s guilty, he deserves to be there, he committed horrible, violent crimes, and was sentenced to 75 years without parole. Hopefully he dies in prison. |
