I don’t tell people IRL this but my cousin is at Red Onion in Virginia, that’s a supermax state prison, the most severe that they get. Jesse Matthews and Lee Malvo are there. It also is almost entirely for isolation and for prisoners who got in trouble in other prisons (so it is the prison system’s prison, hope that makes sense). Anyway, HBO released a fascinating documentary on Red Onion earlier this year called Solitary, it’s intense, but gives you a great inside view of life in prison. https://youtu.be/2eAOzxZNJyE
Why is your cousin there?
I don’t know why he ended up at Red Onion, he must have been involved in a violent altercation at another prison. Even though DCUM is anonymous, I won’t disclose what he initially did to be incarcerated as it was a regionally famous case that had tons of publicity and my family received lots of harasssments and death threats. It’s one of the reasons I moved here to get away from it. But I can tell you he’s guilty, he deserves to be there, he committed horrible, violent crimes, and was sentenced to 75 years without parole. Hopefully he dies in prison.
