Holiday Gift Limits MCPS

Anonymous
My DS is in K so first year of MCPS. Are there any rules about what parents can give to teachers for holiday gifts? I was thinking either cash or a Target gift card. The teacher is amazing.

$20 per family per year I think

The limit is either $20 or $25?

Nobody really pays attention to that though at our school. We give $45 to the teachers who we really appreciate.

Always Target gift cards because then if they don’t want it for themselves, they can buy tissues for the classroom or whatever.

I feel weird giving cash so no cash.

It's $20 at a time, up to $100 per year. We typically do a gift card at Christmas and at the end of the year.

My schools never say a word about a limit. Only know about the from dcum and don't follow it since no one in our schools seems to.

What is a good amount to give the full time teacher?

I think you should give whatever you're comfortable with! Some people can afford $5, some people can afford $40. We are at a FOCUS school, so a large variety of income.

I like my kids to write a short note saying Thank You, so it's personal.

I really love the personal notes and keep them in my desk. On the tough days, I reread them. They energize me. I give the Starbucks cards to homeless people.

I'm a mom who gives Starbucks cards with a note and that's fine with me! I just give you the card to express appreciation. You can regift it any way you want!

Our class is one third international so I don't think anyone is clued in to this U.S. gift giving thing to teachers. I don't even recall doing it when I was K-8.

Amazon gift cards. Anyone can buy anything from Amazon.

I always say Target. They can buy pens for the classroom, or groceries for themselves.

Amazon is tough because not everyone has Amazon Prime, so then people end up paying for shipping.

Teacher here. $50 a kid is my expectation.
