Your teenagers are delightful people

I know you don't always see this at home because that's their safe space where they can really let it all hang out. But I teach your 16-17 year olds and every day :

They make me laugh with their antics.

They shapeshift right in front of me. I will catch them in a slant of light where I can see the adult they are becoming, andnome second later they are a child again. They are always becoming, and it's a privilege to work with them in such a cool point of life.

They show signs of the little kid they once were and still can be. I see them pull out ziploc baggies of Goldfish to snack on. Maybe you even packed it for them, just like when they were in preschool and elementary school.

They confide in me what's going on in their life. I am amazed sometimes at how heavy it is and how they manage to come to school and care at all with all that going on.

They make coming to work fun and enjoyable. Every morning I am happy to see them. I celebrate their successes with them and nurse worry and concern for them. I listen for their names on the birthday list on the announcements and tell them happy birthday next time I see them. I remind them to be kind but I don't admonish them when they curse.

They talk about you sometimes. There is a lot of angst surrounding dads, which weighs on me. They revere their mothers. They joke about you too, about the way moms can be, but the underlying current of affection is always there.

You're doing a good job. I have little kids and teaching your big ones gives me a lot of appreciation for what you have to navigate and deal with. I hope you know they are good kids. I think they're going to be terrific adults. They are a joy to teach. Please enjoy them over the break - I can't wait to hear what they did when they come back to school.

Believe it or not, you yourself and your actions are responsible for the way your teenage kids feel about you, not the "prejudice of ladies."

You actually made me cry, OP. Thank you for teaching and for loving and appreciating the students you serve! These kids are growing up in a tough world, I love seeing them appreciated and praised.

OP, you made me tear up. I know my kids are great kids, and I get that feedback from other adults, and I see how great they are when I carpool them, etc. But it's still such a hard job parenting day in and day out (as it is being a teacher on top of being a parent, so God bless you) and your taking the time to write this down is so lovely.

Thank you. I really admired my kids HS teachers. Dealing with teenagers all day has to be a challenge but they seemed to enjoy it and had a positive outlook like yours. DC went to Whitman and many of the teachers were also sports coaches, debate team coaches, robotics team supervisors, trip leaders, etc so were really investing a lot of time in the kids.

I have 3 teens at Wilson, 14 to 18. I am not a schmaltzy person, but your post made me tear up. I have seen the spirit of your post in many of the teachers and counselors at their school. Thank you for expressing this.
