What blows your mind? The video itself your peoples reaction?

Well, better than making atheists pledge allegiance to the "one nation under God".

Wow. I agree that maybe the school should have thought twice before showing it, but primarily because of the person who pledged to not give the finger while driving. But consider the "radical, leftist agenda" that these people fear -- encouraging people to avoid using plastic shopping bags and to not flush the toilet every time. Wow, really scary stuff, as one person noted:

Ruzicka said she contacted local media about the video after receiving complaints from several parents. Ruzicka said she worried the video's messages would confuse children whose parents might choose to use plastic bags when shopping or who want their children to flush the toilet after every use.

Gee I hope those schools don't show any anti-smoking videos. It might confuse kids whose parents still smoke. And we certainly wouldn't want to encourage any dialogue between parents and children on the environment. It might be too confusing!

Yes, there ARE good things in the video...but the majority of it is weird. Pledging to be a servant to Obama? That's weird.
Think what you want about God, but if you are Athiest or even Jehovah's Witness, you have the choice to NOT say the pledge.

Some schools aren't letting parents dismiss their kids that day, which is wrong.

Maybe the media could start showing Obama smoking so we could have a dialogue about that.

I know that democracy in America had devolved into politics by hissy fit in which the right wing goes nuts over absolutely everything, but this is ridiculous. Watch the video for yourselves:

There are a lot of messages that span the political spectrum. For instance, theres's a black man who promises to "be an American, not an African American". That must be music to right-wing ears. But, the most misunderstood (or simply ignored line), is the pledge to always find humor in everything. The same guy who pledges to server Obama also pledges "allegiance to the funk, to the united funk of funkadelica." Oh, how corrupting!

Anyways, Obama's speech to school children is next week. Should we be saving our outrage until then?

Wow, so I actually watched that. Okay, I'm a little uncomfortable with the "I pledge to be of service to our president" but the vast majority of it is about perfectly mundane things like turning off lights all framed in the themes of patriotism, responsibility, and service. I don't get the hysteria over this. Are some conservatives suddenly seeing patriotism, responsibility, and service as subversive? What ever happen to George H.W. Bush's 1000 points of light? I thought the point was for people to get involved and solve our problems rather than having the government do it.

Secondly, the point of the video is to start a conversation about what people believe they should do to make the world a better place. Nobody has to agree with everything the video says. In fact, this would be a good jumping off point for a discussion in the classroom about the best thing is to do. Boy, if you can't show this video and use it to stir up a dialogue, even a debate -- what can you show? Frankly I thought the point of education was to get kids to discuss and think about their place in society, not just have them memorize facts, e.g., the Civil War was from 1861-1865.

Shouldn't Obama be serving the American people and not the other way around? Im sure Hitler started off the same innocent way...

Wow, this convincing argument has caused me to completely change my mind. In fact, Hitler did get started by asking the German people to show responsibility and to pitch in and look after each other. Of course, they misunderstood and attempted to look after the Poles and the French by invading them. And, don't get me started on the healthcare reform undertaken within the Jewish community. Hitler and Obama. Two peas in the same pod. Why didn't I realize that before?

So you're saying that George H.W. Bush had the same modus operandi as Hitler? Wow, pretty harsh!

So he's wanting us to end slavery but then also asking us to be his servant?
I think the whole thing is creepy

You can attempt to distort this as much as you want, but Obama did not ask for anything beyond showing patriotism, responsibility, and concern for each other. The pledges were whatever the various individuals chose to pledge. If you don't want to end slavery or serve Obama, don't pledge to do so. I am certainly not pledging to skip flushing the toilet.

How is it different from this, Kennedy's Inaugural speech?

And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.

My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.

Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own.
