University of Michigan = party school

The university just suspended all Greek Life activities due to years of rampant sexual assaults, over 30 hospitalizations in one weekend alone, hazing, spiked drinks, and various viral degeneracy.

Wow. What has happened??? I went there in the late 80s and it was pretty serious minded. Of course, there was the Greek system for those who wanted it, but it didn't dominate things. Lots of my peers went on to Ivies for grad school/law school, etc. We had always thought of Ohio State as the big party school, or even MSU. But def. not U Mich.

If that's the scene you want, you can find it at Mich. But if you want a serious academic scene, you can find that too. And if you want an artsy scene, there's that too.

One of the benefits of a huge school. The same is true of most other very large state campuses.

Don't have any kids there, but have friends that do. I can tell you that based on what I've heard, there is plenty of partying going on there and the Greek system is a really big part of the social scene. That said, it's a huge school so if someone is not interested in that aspect of the school I'm sure they can find other ways to occupy themselves.

My in-law's kids go to Michigan, they said their President has been flirting with shutting all fraternities down and was looking for a reason to. Their Pres told the frats if he shut them down, other universities would follow his example. This could be big.

UMich is a perfectly fine school for someone who was rejected from the top 20 schools or when cost is a concern and it is much cheaper than the top 20 school in question.

My DS likes lower ranked Boston College and Villanova far more.

UM is a slightly better school than Penn State and Wisco.
