I've always heard that potatoes and onions didn't need to be refrigerated and should be stored in a cool, dark place (like a basement). Up until now I've only lived in apartments and small houses without a basement. The few times I've tried to store potatoes and onions on the counter or in the pantry they have gone bad quickly so I've always just kept them in the fridge.
We just moved into a house that has a basement with a pantry/closet area and I was thinking of trying to store them down there, but I really don't want to attract vermin. So, where do you store your potatoes and onions? And, a side note, do you follow the "rule" that they need to be separated- not stored in the same drawer? |
| In my husband’s car. The trunk is the best spot. |
| Keep them in two separate cabinets. It doesn't need to be fancy, you can just stick a basket in with your pots and fill it with potatoes, same for onions. |
| We have a bin that holds potatoes on the top and onions on the bottom, which works well. They last quite a long time and never any issue with vermin or what have you. Ours is like this one: https://www.etsy.com/listing/464447535/potato-and-onion-bin-potato-binvegetable |
Same. Two bottom cabinets in random mixing bowls. |

I have a bin like this inside a cabinet. I can't eat onions, so only use it to store potatoes, and the occasional butternut squash. |
| In my fridge. The potatoes have always sprouted eyes ehen we have tried keeping in cabinets. |
| I would make sure the bin is breathable. |

The potato cabinet, of course.

potatoes I keep in the bag and store in a wire basket that's off the floor inside the pantry
onions are chopped within a day of buying and stored in the freezer |
| Nothing in your kitchen is “cool.” So if I have anything more than 6-7 they go in the basement in a wooden bin. Same for onions. I replenish as needed. |
| I can’t remember I have them if I don’t see them. I don’t even buy potatoes because they go bad. Onions are in a bowl on the counter. |
| Onions in the fridge because it reduces the crying when I cut them |
| In paper bags in wire baskets |
| In baskets on open shelving in the kitchen. Potatoes get a kitchen towel thrown over them to block the light so they don't turn green. |
