Need to renew passport- go to post office to submit or just mail it?

Anonymous
I need to renew my passport for a trip on Dec 18.
I will have to pay the expedite fee for sure.
Is there a difference between mailing the passport to renew or going to the post office to submit? I've got an appointment on Wednesday afternoon. Torn between doing the appointment or just mailing it out.

Recommendations?

Thanks!

If you have the appointment, just go.

Mail tomorrow. You'll be fine with expedition.

Post office won't accept it without a reason. I don't think you have one.

??? Most post offices are passport acceptance facilities. I just had my passport and both kids passports renewed at our local post office for no reason other than we needed our passports renewed.

He/she has an appointment. Don't mail, go to the appointment. If you have all paperwork, it takes only minutes. If it doesn't arrive in 3 weeks, then you panic and go to the office downtown and they will find it.
The downtown one will get it for you if you are 2 weeks short of traveling or sth like that.

At the Brentwood Post Office within the past year they were telling adults who were able to renew through the mail to leave.

Maybe this is just at places who see people without appointments.

I have also had this experience. If you can renew through the mail then do so and expedite.

I thought kids weren’t eligible for renew by mail. My DC had to go to the PO recently because his existing passport was issued before age 16.

It will cost you extra ($25?) to submit through the post office.

From State Department website (about the form for a renewal passport for an adult)

Can I apply at an acceptance facility instead of mailing in my renewal application?

No, if you are applying on Form DS-82, acceptance facilities will not take your application. You must mail in your renewal application yourself. We recommend using a trackable delivery method when mailing in your passport application.

Recently had to do this to renew my passport and get a new passport for my child. The City of Fairfax USPS outright said no when I called to ask for an appointment to renew my passport in person and told me to do it by mail. My child on the other hand had to do it in person. In both cases, the passport came into the mail in about 2-3 weeks (non expedited).

Go to the Mount Rainier post office. They are great for this.

Did you read the thread? If you CAN get a new passport through the mail, you CANNOT get it done in person. They do this to keep acceptance agents available for people in need.

Mail it. No reason to go in person, and you are taking a slot that someone else needs.
