I recently renewed and used a service. The fee was $75.00 in addition to the normal, non-expedited passport fee. They had it back in 3 days. The peace of mind in not using the USPS was worth it.

They are very lucrative. But remember, to do it right you need to do visas and document services too (apostille confirmations, legalizations and authentications, etc.). Lots of standing in line. Easiest just to buy one.
