I disagree. If you read Carol Dweck's research--she's a Stanford U professor--she states that people with growth mindsets can always learn and believe they can improve. With her research proving this, the idea of "being smart" is all in our head. In a sense, what we believe about ourselves -- smart or dumb -- will come true based on whether we believe we can improve or not.

You can learn to play multiple instruments at any age if you have the time and money to do so. Many people--including myself--lack the interest to play an instrument well. That wouldn't factor into this. A person has to have the desire in order to improve or learn in a certain area.

If you really believe this, you have not been around really smart people or gifted musicians.

There is a big difference between someone who works for years to gain proficiency and someone to whom theoretical physics or musical composition comes naturally. Think Mozart.

You don’t seem to know much about Taylor’s background. She worked for years to excel — even leaving high school early most days for “talent development” in Nashville. Her first guitar teacher in PA taught her how to write a chorus.

She wasn’t just born knowing how to write songs. Lol

I know many gifted artists and scientists. They work hard.

Well, that is true. There is 1 million other people that could’ve done the same and still not been successful.

Actually, there are 1 million other people who take lessons and lessons and lessons and are not that successful.

She had both talent and training.

Agree. And a dash of luck that Scott B saw her perform at the Nashville coffee shop. Even though he ended up being horrible to her, he also helped to launch her.

If her parents had not moved to Nashville, she might not be where she is now.

She worked hard, did the country accent for a while, was an opening act, was smart to write a song named after a famous person (got attention), and much more. Her parents helped a lot and had the money to do so.

She also practiced guitar for hours even before they moved to Nashville.
