Baby is just laying there in the dark with his eyes open...

...and I feel so guilty! He's a very alert and interactive six weeks old. He had his first shots today so he's been a little lethargic. But he fell asleep after his bottle, woke up when I swaddled him, and since i'm trying to institute a bedtime I put him in his crib and he's just laying there, no protest, not a peep, but eyes wide open. I feel like I should pick him up and cuddle him but I know that's a bad habit.

Not a question, I guess. Just looking for a "me too" or a "don't be silly, he's fine."

Those early weeks sure do make you crazy, huh! I promise you you should go to the kitchen, crack open a beverage of your choice, then go to the living room and turn on 90 Day Fiancé.

If he’s not complaining, leave him alone.

Oh my god - who convinced you that cuddling your six WEEK old is a bad habit??? If you want to hold your baby, hold him. But I agree with PP - eat and drink something first.

OP here - actually I'm going to bed because he'll be up again in a couple of hours. Or if he sleeps longer because he's not feeling like himself, then all the better. I just worry because he's usually so feisty!

Young babies aren't used to bright lights yet. He is probably enjoying the view.

I just meant, when they're supposed to be going to bed for the night - they need to learn to put themselves to sleep, not be rocked to sleep and then be transferred to the crib.

When was the last time you had a newborn. OP needs to get some sleep.

If baby isn't fussing, he's fine.

When should it be? His next bottle is probably at 10:30 or 11, would that be better? I mean, he still eats every few hours so what is a "bedtime" anyway? Thigh at night he does tend to go right back to sleep.

If he's not fussing he's fine, but don't feel you can't cuddle him for fear of the "rules." Cuddle your new baby whenever and for however long you'd like. You are his world.

I am so jealous of you, OP. My 7-week old refuses to be pit down. Ever. EVERRRR. I could start a blog about all the ridiculous things I’ve done with a baby stuck on my boob. She also has a fine coating of crumbs because I only ever eat with her attached to me. Enjoy this moment of peace! He’ll need you plenty, don’t worry. Relish the few times when he doesn’t!

Gotta run. I put baby in the rock n play at the beginnjng of this message. You guessed it - waaahhhhhh!

Their brains need quiet time to digest and consolidate all the stimulation they take in during the day through sight, sound and movement. You are helping your baby's brain develop by leaving him in the crib.

Well said.

OP - at this age, just try to put your baby down drowsy but awake occasionally. Don't worry too much about sleep stuff yet.

If you want to hold him for some naps, or snuggle (safely!) for naps, by all means, do it. The time you have to do that is so, so short. Enjoy it!
