CHINS petition experience

Anonymous
Can you please tell me your experience with CHINS petition? If you had to do it again, would you or would you not register your child? Why or why not?
Any insight is much appreciated!

Op, I saw your post in the teens forum and here. My guess is that your family's in crisis. I would contact your local chapter of the arc to put you in touch with a counselor who can describe the process. GL.

My family is in crisis with a very out of control teenager. I know nothing about CHINS but it keeps coming up from the school counselor. I was looking for any other parent out the that has experience in this route. What do you mean by local chapter of the arc? TIA

I don't know where you live or how you are planning to use it but if child is out of control I'd try to get them hospitalized not CHINS. CHINS is child in need of assistance and its either through child welfare or through juvenile justice. If they are under court order, it generally takes away your parental rights and decision making and they place the child in a group home or foster home or something (most are pretty horrible places) and usually they will come after you to pay for it/child support.

I'm sorry you are going through this but find another way vs. involving the system. For some parents, especially if their health insurance will not pay for treatment, its their only option but if you have any other option, use it.

ARC would not make sense in your situation.

Thank you! That makes sense

OP, do you have a therapist or psychiatrist who could guide you to a treatment option? Or perhaps your pediatrician?

Be very careful with school counselors. They try to be helpful but have no clue how the system works. Once you sign over, you have very few rights and it will be a nightmare getting your kid out. You lose all decision making. They could send your kid to a treatment facility cross country and drug them with drugs you don't agree with and you have absolutely no say. Do not do this.

Start with a neuropsych - lots of recommendations on here and try to figure out what is going on. Often mental health issues can start when kids are early to mid teens and are often overlooked.

OP - It is hard to know what you mean by an out of control teenager, but in general getting the teen to a psychiatrist for an evaluation would be a first step. The doctor could then help guide you as far as further diagnostic and/or treatment options go. Any medication intervention or change is going to take up to a few weeks to work. A doctor would be best resource to know if immediate hospitalization may be necessary for stabilization. Other options might be in hospital for a time, therapeutic day school program or residential program. You may also want to know how to deal with a crisis situation in your area.

I don't think her kid is in a position for testing at the moment.

NAMI or ARC will have resources to help you. Please call your local chapter.

Probably not for testing but most of those resources are pretty useless. They are better off calling the crisis center in their county or doing their own hospitalization like a PP suggested vs. doing CHINS. CHINS is basically you giving all control to the government and you are stripped of your parental rights.

NAMI and ARC can guide you to other resources other than CHINS. I'm not encouraging that option.

The Arc is for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. That may not be a good fit for OP.

OP, I am sorry you are going through this. If you are in DC, I found CHAMPS to be of some assistance. They cannot restrain or do much beyond calling 911, but I found that having them there to talk with the kid gave me a little bit of space to get my pets to a safe place, make critical phone calls, and calm down a bit without needing to physically manage behavior or worry that my house would be flooded/burned down while my back was turned. They accompanied me to Children's and I think their report was useful in getting DC admitted. The admission itself wasn't terribly helpful (basically if your kid can get through a day without needing an injection of haldol and a trip to the seclusion room, he's going to be sent home) but it did give us a break to recover a bit and know DC was safe while we tried to put other supports into place.

She was tested and no underlying psychological problem was detected.

.

You're splitting hairs and we don't know what diagnosis the op's kid has. Op, google your town/city/county and arc, for example
https://arcdc.net

My parents have were able to connect to appropriate resources/practioners for my sibling by contacting their local arc and nami offices.
