Has anyone tried these two? Any opinions? |
Advice from a teacher - Hire a teacher to tutor your child or provide enrichment. They are less money than these programs and much more effective. |
That is a good idea. Where do you find one? |
Contact local schools or put an ad in the paper. You can search for tutors similiar to how you search for a nanny or school. Determine your child's needs and expectations for the tutoring session and begin to interview perspective teachers. Just a thought.
What grade is your DC in and what areas does she/he need tutoring or enrichment in???? I maybe able to provide assistance. Former elementary school teacher promoted to school administration position. |
I am looking for a reading specialist for one and a math tutor for the other. What rates are reasonable? Is it legal to advertise at the schools? |
I think most teachers charge between $30 and $50 for an hour session. Ask at your DC's current school they are probably a number of teachers looking to tutor especially sense summer is coming. Speaking from a teacher's perspective we would rather tutor students in the summer versus teaching summer school. Also run an ad in a local newpaper or craigslist. More suggestions ![]() |
I agree that you will get more for your money with a private tutor. I am a teacher, and have worked at Sylvan Learning Center and thought their program was terrible and a rip-off for parents. I don't know much about Score or Kumon. For tutoring, I don't know ANYONE who tutors for less than $50 per hour. The going rate where I teach in Fairfax County is between $50-60 per hour. In the city, I would expect to pay more than that.
Your child's school is a great place to find a tutor -- most reading specialists do some tutoring on the side, or have a network of other professionals who they can contact for reccommendations. Good luck! |
I'm not sure what your situation is now OP, but I have a small group literacy tutoring group for the summer http://www.jhursey.com/Site/Summer_Reading_Program_.html. Perhaps it is appropriate for your child. Please contact me with any questions. |
Is your group only for 6 & 7 year olds? And does your program require participation the entire 15 sessions? |
I actuallly tutor in new orleans and slidell. 2 times a week only 200.00 per month.

I suggest you try Beestar. http://www.beestar.org/index.jsp It is a website full of free math practice. And it also has English Language, Social Studies, and G&T Math programs requiring some payment. I registered my son last year, and he really loves it! Why not have a try? I don't want to waste money on Kumon, because I don't think it's that good. Megan |
Also, edhelper.com has lots of materials. |
Hi! My daughter used them neither. She has been using beestar.org. It is a great online web site and offers curricular-based exercises of math, English language art, science, etc. These exercises are very interesting, full of interesting stories, pictures, and also many practical problems. It looks good. My daughter loves it very much. ![]() Nicole |
Score help my son a lot when he was in 1st grade. His math and reading improved by about a year and a half in 6 months of going to Score. Kids like it cause then learn at their own pace and its like a game to them using the computer and all.
After 1 and a half year of Score we stop going because he was getting too far ahead. My son is in 3rd grade now, his math is at 4th grade level, but I've been tutoring him myself on a daily basis. I now think parents should spend time with their kids doing this themselves. You, as a parent, should take charge and be his primary teacher. All kinds of workbook out there (reading/math/ you name it) to help you as parent to do this with your kids. I think its OK to supplement it with tutoring, be it Kumon or Score but don't totally oursource it to them. Don't leave it all up to the school neither. My 2 cents. Oz |
You can also find tutors on craiglist. |
