Link for World Languages offered at each HS (FCPS)?

Anonymous
Like many things... it used to be easy to find on the old website. But, I can't find it with the new one.

Does anyone have a link showing which languages are offered at each HS?

They took it down, since most parents in the pyramid and kids applying to the schools could get the info in their class selection packets. It is on the schools websites.

Only people trying to scam the World Language for pupil placement needed it otherwise.

No. It's not "people trying to scam..."

My child mentioned that she might be interested in Japanese. I know it is not offered at our current HS or the other two that are closest to us. I know that it is offered in one of the Alexandria HSs -- which would be very far for us and I'm certain there is no bus there. However, if there was a link like they used to have, I would be able to tell how far it is to the nearest school that offers Japanese without digging through 8 or more HS websites trying to find their curriculum sign up sheets. That's not scamming. That's trying to find out where world languages are offered. FWIW, we are already zoned for one of the top HS in the county. Transferring to another school for a language or academy class would be seen as a step down, not a step up, unless it was one of about two other HSs.

Carson MS has Japanese immersion, and Westfields, South Lakes (IB) and TJ have Japanese for kids coming out of Carson.

I believe Lake Braddock has Japanese.

Thanks. The issue is that a rising 9th grader would like to consider her language options, and her parent would like to know how far away each of these options is. FCPS should make it easy for kids to see where the programs are.

They don't hide which academies offer Dance or Auto Repairs.

Why not put the languages each school offers in an easy to find list under the "World Language Instruction" tab?

Because they don’t want kids pupil placing to a better school and using world laonguage as an excuse. They only want kids who really, really want it.

If people want to scam, they usually have a school in mind and can easily get on that school's website to find a reason to go there. It's a lot easier than trying to figure out world language choices.

This info also helpful for folks moving to the area if this is an important consideration for their child (few would make decisions on this criteria alone, but still helpful to know when comparing HS in the region, etc.)

I think that Oakton is phasing Japanese out. This is the last year it is being offered, at Level IV/ AP only. Next year it is gone. So no help for a kid starting HS.

No. It really isn’t. It has to have an Academy, with a sequence you will give up electives to take (does your kid want 2 years of pharmacy tech
Classes?), be the closest school offering a language not at you base school, or be the closest AP school if you are IB or IB if you are AP. That’s it.

OP here.

I actually emailed FCPS and they sent a chart to me. It's not going to paste well in this forum, but they do have a chart and they are planning to put it on the website (as they should). Not sure when it will be posted. Hopefully by Jan when kids are thinking about classes for next fall.
