New APS Elem Boundaries (ASFS)

Anonymous
Can someone please tell me what the possible boundaries might be for ASFS? We are currently at Taylor but our younger child starts K in 2019 (and older child won't be in 5th grade then). Do you think we'll end up having to change to ASFS?

Please refresh my memory. I understand ASFS will become a neighborhood school. But is Key now full immersion so the kids living in that zone might get sent to ASFS? Trying to understand how this might impact our family.

TIA.

Does anyone know if ASFS currently grants sibling preference? If so, would that disappear if the current out of bounds students are grandfathered in?

I am not interested in our kids attending this school. Just trying to understand how complicated all of this becomes if APS doesn't just move PUs wholesale across all of Arlington (like ripping off a bandage) versus doing a half-assed approach in an effort to appease everyone.

This process won't start until early next year, so there's no information at the moment. The SB has to get throught middle school redistricting first.

Where do you live? ASFS will pull from some of current key, some of Taylor, some glebe and some ashlawn. It's possible some Taylor may go to glebe as capacity shifts east, and some current key will go to long branch.

All schools will likely have boundaried changed so unless you are in walk zone hard to predict.

We are in Cherrydale. A few of our neighbors are closer to ASFS than we are. We are roughly equidistant. Fortunately, both are just over a mile away, so my kids can take the bus (crossing Lee Highway would be a concern).

I read on some other thread that APS sometimes grandfathers 5th graders and allows the younger siblings to attend same school, but then younger kid has to leave when older one graduates from elementary school. Does this sound right?

Who knows? You might be switched. They're stuffing in a whole other school in North Arlington... All of the boundaries are going to shift.

This. With Reed coming online in 2021 as a neighborhood school as well you’ll see lots more shuffling.

We are a little over a mile away from asks and Taylor so I doubt we wI'll be shifted into that area.

You won't go to Reed, but over a mile away from ASFS means that depending on the direction could move you to Taylor, Long Branch, Glebe, Jamestown. Big readjustments are coming in a few years so unless you are right there next door to the school, don't presume you won't get moved. I'm not saying it will happen, no one knows, but with the population booming boundaries aren't staying stagnant.

Right. However, Reed will impact (in your direction) McKinley and Glebe. That will impact Ashlawn & Taylor as all the boundaries shift.

All the elementary boundaries will probably shift southeast because of Reed.

One thing to consider is that APS tries to limit the amount of times a child is rezoned to just once per level (once in elementary, once in middle school, etc). So it's highly unlikely you would be rezoned twice--both for the upcoming rezoning (to take effect in 2019) and after Reed (to take effect in 2021), because your kindergartener would be in the same level (elementary for both rezonings).

Because these rezonings happen so close together, I would hope APS would take that into consideration when making changes next spring.

I don't think they are rezoning the N twice. South Arlington ES boundaries are changing in 2019 to coincide with the opening of the new ES, but N ES boundaries will not change until Reed opens.
