What age? My son's team has played them a few times at U9 and now U10. Pretty weak overall but not as bad as others we've played. Weak foot skills and therefore unable to deal tactically. A couple of ok players but doesn't seem like the strongest program. I don't know anything about their coaches or how the club runs.

This would be for U9 next fall

Small club. Might combine with Reston next year.

Which area do you live in? Is Mclean/Loudoun/Herndon an option? What are you looking to get out of a travel program? At the younger ages like U9-U10, you can always augment team practices with technical training.

Small, surrounding larger clubs tend to get the best players (McLean DA, Loudoun). Recently joined VPL for top teams and they seem to be doing ok in the league.

Yes those are all options. Ideally we would stay with GF because we love our town and our local friends but they could all work. DS is a good player (he shines on his rec team, I have no idea how he would stack up against other kids. Seems on equal par with his McLean soccer friends) and extremely driven and focused. He just loves the game with a passion and is either kicking a ball, watching soccer on TV or talking about it at all times. When he gets home from practice, he plays more soccer. After games, he stays and kicks the ball around. Just never gets tired and is constantly hustling for the ball.

We are looking for him to be with other kids who take the sport seriously and have a real understanding for the game like he does. For example, he's one of those kids who sees that if teammates are bunched up, he should get open downfield and look for a pass. He's 7 so I don't see that happening much with his teammates. I really hate the idea of traveling around all weekend just for a soccer game but if there is a real difference bt travel and rec we will do it.

He did HP Elite in Chantilly last summer and really enjoyed it so we plan to do that again this winter.

TIA!

You're on the right track. I would go with McLean if you can, they are a CCL club and your longest drive would be up to Gaithersburg, MD. Most the other clubs are in NOVA.

Richmond, VA Beach, Charlottesville and Roanoke also play in CCL against McLean.

So does this mean we would have to take him to the above for away games? Eeek. When are games usually, Saturdays or Sundays?

Do kids try out for multiple travel teams to see which team they make? For example, could DS try out in Arlington, Mclean and GF?

McLean is so overrated and full of type A parents and coaches... Stay w GF ...for now... The best thing you are doing for your son is HP Elite clinics. Travel soccer games in all leagues are on Sundays (with an ocassional Saturday game) and tournaments on all holiday weekends (memorial day, columbus day, tgiving, etc).

Depends on if its a home or away game. But yes at some point in the year, expect a couple games further away if you are in CCL, they rotate who travels to whom each year. Plus 1-3 tournaments with overnight stays. Other better leagues also have travel commitments so its hard to escape. (Thus..its called Travel Soccer)

It's just interesting bc a friend of mine has a son in travel sports in NJ and they don't have to leave the area to do it. How do people manage with church/religious school on Sundays? I guess they just don't go?
