Terrified

Had stomach cramps and diarrhoea for a couple days, now the diarrhoea has turned grossly bloody. It looks more blood than stool. Terrified, I will see a doctor of course but I am so so scared I have something like cancer.

It's probably some sort of food poisoning. Where and what have you eaten lately?

+1. It's far more likely to be food poisoning than something more serious like cancer. Try to stay hydrated!

Drink Gatorade until you can get to doctor.

How old are you?

33. Female.

I ate a lot of salad recently and ate at a few coffee bars but I can't see it
being that, seems too extreme. I am so panicked right now. It seems to be more blood than stool

I think this warrants a visit to urgent care or the ER. I wouldn't wait until Monday to see your doctor. Especially if it's frequent.

So you don’t have your period, right? This is different from having your period?

I work on a GI floor and see GI bleeds weekly. Most of the time it turns out to be a GI disorder and not cancer. Some are treated with bowel rest, some with antibiotics, and some with surgery. At least for me, it has been far more common it's not cancer.

That said, go to the ED. You should probably not be eating or drinking and be on strict bowel rest. Which means IV fluids. It's also very easy to become anemic with a GI bleed. If there is as much blood as you say, you'll likely be heading to the hospital from your doctor's office anyways for testing, etc. I've had quite a few patients admitted directly from their PCPs/GI doctors office due to a GI bleed. Cut the middle man out.

Just want to add, being admitted to the hospital also increases the speed of which you'll have a colonoscopy and endoscopy (to figure out where the bleeding is stemming from). Normally I advocate PCP/urgent care as the first step. A GI bleed is one of the few instances where I say ER first.

Had this a few weeks ago and turned out to be Ecoli. I wouldn't be rushing to the ER. You say you have stomach cramps and diarrhoea alongside it so it does sound like food poisoning. Obviously if there is tons of blood, you develop other symptoms or/and the bleeding doesn't stop then you need to urgently get to hospital but for now, I wouldn't panic too much.

No it's not my period.
It is bright red.

So have you gone to ER like several folks have suggested? If not, why?
Anonymous
If you have bright red blood coming out of your rectum in large quantities you should be at the Emergency department.

OP, I hope you're posting from the waiting room of the ER. If not, go now and let us know how you're doing.
