Peds who do circumcisions?

Anonymous
Not looking for a circumcision debate here.

My OB did my first son's circ in the hospital, but she may not be here for #2's delivery, so I'm trying to figure out how to find someone I trust to do the procedure, ideally in the hospital. Can anyone rec a ped (or OB) who will come to Sibley to do a circumcision? Or what my other options are (again, other than not circ'ing at all).

Thanks!

To have it done in the hospital, you need to find someone who is authorized to perform surgery at that hospital. That is why it is the OB who usually performs the circumcision and not a pediatrician. Even if your OB cannot be there for the delivery would he/she be available a day or two later to perform the circumcision?

Unfortunately, probably not. So the OB who covers for my OB is the best bet, I guess (assuming he/she performs circumcisions). I'll have to check with my OB to see what the contingency plan is....

I cannot remember exactly but I think in our case, it was just the pedi on call from our practice that did it - the doctor on call comes to the hospital after the baby is born, to check on it, So, if you have a pedi practice, maybe any of the drs would do it?

We did not even have to worry about it, they just asked if we want it, and took care of it. It is a rather small procedure so we did not even thought to ask for a particular doctor.

Thanks, I'll check with our ped practice. I've just always been under the impression that OBs do it much more commonly than peds (in part because of what a PP said -- OBs already have surgical privileges at the hospital, while most peds don't do procedures). We'll see!

If you don't get any other leads, call one of the Reform synagogues - there are some pediatricians who do brisses. They would have lots of experience.

My OB, Dr.Engel, who does deliveries at Sibley, also does circumsions. He is also a mogul if you were to go that route. He is from Foxhall Ob

The GP we saw when DS was born offered to do it. We chose not to circ, but if we had changed our minds, the GP we were seeing was happy to do it for us.
Several people I know have called a Rabbi for suggestions.

There is no such thing as pediatric surgery privileges at Sibley, since they don't do pediatrics as a hospital (just like if anything was wrong with your baby after birth, he/she would need to go to Gtown for surgery). So you will need to have an OB do it.

Peds do it more often than OBs. We had it done in a drs office (on the 8th day - guy was a mohel as well as a pediatrician). It was a very positive way to do it since I was in the room the whole time, and my son was only away from my breast for 60 seconds. I highly recommend asking the Reform Jews you may know. They will have names or know where to get them.

OP here -- Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I actually am Jewish but have opted for hospital circs; in my pg-addled state, I forgot that I could call our synagogue for OB/mohel recs. I'll do that. Thanks again!

Insiders viewpoint...

In the hospital it is your OB who performs the circ. If your OB is not available, than whoever is on-call for your OBs practice will do the procedure. If you come to the hospital and the house OB performs the delivery, they will also perform the circ.
I would like to politely correct the previous commenter, peds do NOT do circs 'more' often. Very rarely does a family leave the hosptial without a circ desiring a circ unless it is for religious and/or medical reasons.

Actually, where my son was born, it was the peds in the hospital who did it, and not the obs.

PP - are you from the west coast or military? ... very few east coast peds do circs

NICURN, thanks for your insight. I'm the OP, and I'm not sure why I specified a ped rec; I knew that OBs were the primary hospital circumcisers.

My concern is one of trust -- I know my OB, know what technique/equipment she uses to circ, etc. She did my first son's circ, and it made me infinitely more comfortable to have her (or someone highly recommended) do it. But maybe you can assuage my concerns a bit -- you must see in-hospital circs often; is it so routine that I shouldn't be concerned and should assume that pretty much any OB knows what he/she is doing?
