I think that if you are booking a second seat for a medical reason (you are very obese and can not fit into a standard seat) that the airline should not be able to take that second seat away from you. If you are booking a second seat for convenience purposes - want a place to set your book, don't feel like sitting next to anyone else, etc - then the airline should be able to take that seat away at their discretion.

I don't understand why people get upset and scream fat shaming when people are so fat they take up another person's paid seat?! I posted up thread that this happened to me last week on a flight. The woman had to hold my seatbelt strap up because she was sitting on half of it so I could buckle it. Why is her right to be fat more important than my right to the full seat I paid for and easy access to my seatbelt? She should have been told to buy a second seat! She had to put the arm rest up between us because she was so big!

There is a difference between a medical necessity and a wanted convenience. I actually "get" how a passenger may miss a flight and need desperately needs to get on the next available flight (maybe they need to get to a sick family member). If you have booked two seats because you don't feel like holding your book, I can see an airline taking that spare seat back from you to accommodate another passenger. I can not see an airline expecting people to squish in together and basically share the same seat. That's nuts.

They wanted her to sit quietly and just put up with them half sitting on her the entire flight. As had apparently (according to the couple) happened every week on their other flights. Basically shame and intimidate her into submission. Outrageous.
