if you have a middle schooler in the AAP program

could you go me a huge favor and just list what courses your child is taking for 7th/8th grade? This isn't a weird competitive thing-my child is in special ed and I am not getting straight answers from FCPS admin.

8th grader:

Algebra 1 Honors (could have taken in 7th and be in Geometry)
Energy & Matter AA (Science)
Civics AA
English 8 AA
PE 8

Plus kids get two electives;
advanced orchestra
Media communications

Many kids take Spanish I (HS level) as an elective. Our older DC did and we discovered that the Spanish teacher was not teaching at the HS level and DC was not ready for Spanish II. So DC2 is holding off for HS, which has more language age options).

Also, DC2 is 2E, and did Strategies for Success s an elective last year, and it was very helpful.

NP-What's Strategies for Success?

It's an executive functioning, organizational skills and self advocacy class. Which we forced our ADHD MS DC2 into kicking and screaming. And she ended up really getting a lot out of it and asking to take for a second semester. I think it is way under utilized, and most MS kids-- especially boys, whose EF skills develop later, but also ADHD girls and girls who tend to be perfectionist/anxious/overwhelmed should absolutely take it. It would have saved so much grief if we had known about it for DC1. All MSs have it. And I have heard that in some it is a glorified study hall. Which is a shame. My kid ended the year keeping up with homework, blocking out large assignments, checking on her own grades in Gradebook, finding something was missing, and going to resolve it with the teacher, and getting a 4.0 in a competitive AAP Center with ADHD.

Have you tapped into the new SEPTA (Special Education PTA) in FCPS? They have a Special Populations subgroup that includes 2E and is very active. There is a Facebook support group too.

AAP is for English, science & history. Math placements are separate. In high school, you can pick AP or honors class by class, which can be easier.

Would you mind sharing which middle your kids attend? I hope it's the same one we are zoned for, my DCs could really use this.

Not the PP, but my child is taking Strategies at Luther Jackson and he's really getting a lot out of it.
