This article provides informative analysis as to how immigration was a major factor that cost Hillary the election.
Democrats point to a thousand reasons that Hillary Clinton lost the presidential election. Here is another. In political circles, it’s common knowledge that in four key states President Trump unexpectedly carried counties that Democratic presidential campaign strategists had failed to recognize as crucial terrain — sparsely populated areas of Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania. What Democrats missed was the profound political impact recent immigration trends were having on the more rural parts of the once homogeneous Midwest — that the region had unexpectedly become a flash point in the nation’s partisan immigration wars. The immigration stance of the Clinton campaign contrasted with Obama’s record. While Obama called for immigrants who were brought into this country as children to be allowed to stay, he stressed policies calling for the deportation of criminals and in fact deported more people than George W. Bush or Bill Clinton. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/05/opinion/clinton-trump-immigration.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fopinion |
I have lived in 3 of those states. People are really really intolerant of different people. It is scary. |
This remains a challenge for the Democrats: how to be tolerant and accepting of immigrants who form a key part of their support but not to alienate most of middle America who are white and still represent the majority of the voters. |
Well, for starters, you don't call anyone who disagrees with you "deplorable". |
The key might be not being tolerant of ILLEGAL immigration. People all over this country are very tolerant of people of different races. “White middle America,” as you call it, are not tolerant of illegal immigrants. |
But the states went for Obama in a big way so we saw was a sea-change in attitudes among voters who felt the Democrats were out of step with them - and that caused them to vote overwhelmingly for Trump. |
Oh, please - that is the one thing Hillary was 100% correct about. If you can't see that the trump administration is truly deplorable than you are beyond hope. |
Whatever Democrats did wrong - Hillary, Bernie, Wasserman-Schults, et al - we cannot do again.
trump is actually so much worse than I feared he would be. We Democrats f*cked up big time. |
+1 Sorry, sensitive snowflakes. Wake up and admit you love your deplorable friends. |
Really was horrible that Hillary set such a bad example by calling people with different political opinions "deplorable." Now she's got half of the liberal sheep doing the same thing. They think it's smart to double down on the behavior that cost them the election. So stupid. |
KKK = "different political opinion" Stick your head in the ground, deplorable. |
Do you live in the same America as I do? And, as the child of legal immigrants who grew up right next to one of the areas discussed in that article, I disagree with your assessment that "White middle America" is tolerant of legal immigration of non-whites. There are great things about the US...and in many ways we are a more tolerant society than most. But there is rampant racism and xenophobia in this country as well. Ask any non-white, wherever they grew up, and they will tell you. |
No, Snowflake, anyone with a triple digit IQ can see how deplorable the trump administration is. |
Yes, because had Hillary Clinton not called the "basket of deplorables" you would have voted for her. Please... you are so tiresome and whiny. |
NO....she didn't call the KKK deplorable. She was referring to half of all Trump supporters. (The KKK is less than 1/2 of 1%.) or are you saying that all Ttump voters are KKK members? |
