What Democrats missed was the profound political impact recent immigration trends were having on the more rural parts of the once homogeneous Midwest — that the region had unexpectedly become a flash point in the nation’s partisan immigration wars.

The immigration stance of the Clinton campaign contrasted with Obama’s record. While Obama called for immigrants who were brought into this country as children to be allowed to stay, he stressed policies calling for the deportation of criminals and in fact deported more people than George W. Bush or Bill Clinton.

I have lived in 3 of those states. People are really really intolerant of different people. It is scary.

The key might be not being tolerant of ILLEGAL immigration. People all over this country are very tolerant of people of different races. “White middle America,” as you call it, are not tolerant of illegal immigrants.

But the states went for Obama in a big way so we saw was a sea-change in attitudes among voters who felt the Democrats were out of step with them - and that caused them to vote overwhelmingly for Trump.

Really was horrible that Hillary set such a bad example by calling people with different political opinions "deplorable." Now she's got half of the liberal sheep doing the same thing. They think it's smart to double down on the behavior that cost them the election. So stupid.

Do you live in the same America as I do?

And, as the child of legal immigrants who grew up right next to one of the areas discussed in that article, I disagree with your assessment that "White middle America" is tolerant of legal immigration of non-whites.

There are great things about the US...and in many ways we are a more tolerant society than most. But there is rampant racism and xenophobia in this country as well. Ask any non-white, wherever they grew up, and they will tell you.
