| My daughter is allowed to enjoy one 30 minute show on weekdays and an hour of TV on the weekend. She watches wild kratts and dog shows on animal planet. This morning she said that she doesn't feel like she is "normal" because the other kids her age are watching other shows. She wants to participate in conversation at school about TV. What do your 8 year old 3rd graders watch? She is a little sensitive and doesn't like too much tension or meaness. Ideas? |

Ask her what shows her friends talk about and look them up on Common Sense media to see which you think would be ok to try.
|
| Maybe she'd like Full House and Fuller House. |

America's Got Talent
The Voice Chopped Jr |
| Thanks! |

My son is 8 and has no interest in what most other kids (especially boys) are watching at his age. He prefers non-fiction documentaries on the planet, space, nature, etc. He also likes sweeter shoes that his little sister loves--Octonauts, Paw Patrol. Much younger stuff than most 8 year olds are into. He handles this by staying quiet about what he watches with peers, though.
I've shown him some Bad Lip Reading videos on youtube (like the Star Wars ones) so he can talk about those. They're innocent enough. I nor he has no interest in some of the crap that's on TV, and aren't going to cave to peer pressure. A LOT Of kids are watching age-inappropriate stuff. |
| Wild Kratts is for three year olds. |
My kid hated it when she was three but watched by age 6 or so. I'm sure some kids who are really into animals keep watching at age 7-8. Odd Squad still appeals to that age too. Less sure about at age 8. |
| My 8 year old boy likes some of the tween-type shows - Lab Rats and Bunk'd come to mind. |
My 10 year will still watch Wild Kratts if it's on (which is sometimes is, since we also have younger kids), and sings along to the theme song. He stopped seeking it out around age 7 or 8, though. |

My 8 year old likes:
Odd Squad School of Rock Phineas and Ferb Johnny Test |
| Loved the netflix shows Trollhunter, Series of unfortunate events and Skylanders |
| My 8 yo loves Teen Titans Go, The Simpsons, Bob's Burger, cooking shows, shark documentaries and How it's made. |

We don't get Disney channel, but if we did my 8 yo would be all over every show offered in the tween genre. Instead we watch America's Got Talent or The Voice. She watches Sabrina the Teenage Witch on Prime. We'll look on You Tube for things like Treehouse Masters.
Plus anything mermaids - Mako Mermaids, bad movies about mermaids, whatever. As long as it's mermaids. She does like Wild Kratts. I think this is the age where they start feeling self conscious. Forgot to add Barbie movies - Barbie and the Dream House is well written. DD will only admit to this among good friends. |
