Increasing Anxiety Issues in 9 Yr Old DD

Anonymous
My DD is about to turn 9 and is having increasing anxiety issues. I've had significant anxiety issues my entire life, so I recognize much of her behaviors since I did the exact same things. I'm looking for someone to help us treat this, counsel her etc... Does anyone have any information on a counselor, psychologist or psychiatrist that has been effective in treating your child's anxiety? We are in the Bethesda/Rockville area. Thanks!

We see someone at Jonah Greene Associates in Kensington and it's been very helpful for my 8yo. Other recommendations I received from a friend who is a therapist include:
Ross Center in DC
Abrams and Associates in Kensington
Charles Mansueto group in Silver Spring

Have you done a neuropsych evaluation? I know a lot of people react to hostility with this question, but really it's helpful to eliminate possible causes and get answers.

Puberty hormones could be making the anxiety worse.

We use Center for Anxiety and Bahavioral Change in Rockville for psychologist and Ross Center for psychiatrist. 10 year old son had debilitating anxiety starting at 9.

We haven’t. I actually didn’t even realize this is something we should do. I’ll definitely check this out.

I would. My kid started repetitive behaviors. The neuropsychological evaluation helped us pinpoint that it wasn't autism. Helped us pinpoint that it was actually OCD. Still not ideal, but at least we know where to focus efforts.

My niece has ADHD and dyslexia diagnosed through a neuropsychological evaluation. Her anxiety was greatly reduced by appropriate interventions.

Your kid could have just anxiety or anxiety related to something else. It may make a difference if you try medication. Our insurance paid for half of the evaluation. Definitely worthwhile.

Ditto. My DD had a neuropsych done for suspected ADHD and turns out she had significant anxiety. Didn't know they are commonly found together.

OP here, it's interesting that you mentioned dyslexia. My DD was diagnosed with dyslexia last year. Who do you go through for a neuropsych evaluation? Should I go through my pediatrician?
