My 12 year old son is starting to get pimples (mainly on his nose). I know dealing with acne is a rite of passage but I'd like to help keep it to a minimum. So two questions:
1) What sort of cleaning regime should I have him start? Any recommended products? Is that infomercial wonder Proactiv something I should consider or is it just dumb? Good drug store product? 2) Should I take him to a dermatologist now, as this is just beginning? Thanks. |

I'd take him to a dermatologist but I wrestled with acne for 10 years and was miserable.
If you want to try OTC first, I'd use a gentle non soap cleanser in the morning and a benzyl peroxide cleanser in the evening. Like Panoxyl. Biore strips are good for the nose if he has blackheads. Overdrying can cause more oil production. If he needs to wash his face a 3rd time I'd use the non soap cleanser. Change pilow case nightly too. Or close. |
| Neutrogena Oil Free (the orange one) is a great face wash and does not have a flowery smell. Their entire acne line has been great for my 13 year old. |
| Also a good time to remind him that it's worse if you eat fried food and other junk... |
| I have trouble getting my 14-year-old DS to wash his face regularly, but he willingly uses (too many) face wipes before bed. So you might try those if washing is a burden too large to bear. ~eyeroll~ |
Not true. |
| both my kids (m/f)just use my clinique face wash in the shower, or their own aveeno wash (again, in the shower). My DD also uses facial scrub occasionally. |
| Mine uses a Biore cleanser in the shower and Clearasil pads before bed and in the morning. |
I agree. My 14 yo sees the dermatologist DH and I use and we pretty much all have the same regime except DS has a prescription face cream he uses twice a day after washing. We all wash our faces twice a day with Dove soap (I have to use Dove sensitive). None of us can use the benzyl peroxide cleaners because it irritates our skin. If DS regularly washes his face like he's supposed to, his face looks good. If he doesn't, it breaks out. Now that school is in session and he has PE, I got him some of the Aveeno wipes so he can wipe his face after PE. If DS' skin gets too dry because of the prescription face cream, I have him use the Aveeno Radiant Daily Moisturizer that I use. It's oil free. Oh, and those Biore strips are amazing! HTH. |
+1 Yep. It cured the pimples my 12-year old was getting. He uses it at night and in the morning he uses the blue astringent by Neutrogena. He did not have a ton of pimples--just some popping up now and again. He also didn't really have a skin regimen prior. He showers before bed so I'm not sure he was washing his face in the morning. Also, summer, sports and sunscreen seemed to be a problem. |
| OP. Sorry that I totally forgot to come back to this thread! Many thanks to all the PPs to who responded with ideas and suggestions. |
| My son uses Proactiv |
| Another big fan of the Neutrogena products. My son (13) said the orange cleanser made his face worse (I use this myself) so he just uses soap. I also got him some of those moist cleansing cloths (non-medicated) and he can use those anytime and they have helped. The Neutrogena On The Spot benzoyl peroxide cream clears his face nicely if he remembers to use it daily. |
| Before taking him to the dermatologist, try something simple like CeraVe face wash. Make sure he stays on top of it twice a day...he can even use it in the shower. My boy started getting pimples around that age, but we realized it was because he wasn't properly washing his face (thought using soap in the shower was enough). A simple skin care regimen cleared his face up pretty quickly. |
| Proactiv is the best |
