Better Things

Who is watching this? We just heard about it, the 2nd season premiered last night on FX. Pamela Adlon co-created the show with Louis CK, the writing is great and Adlon's acting is really good.

We had no idea this had already aired for one season, we are definitely going to go back and watch the rest of the episodes. It's getting rave reviews from the critics.

Sam Fox is an actress, who is also a single mother raising three daughters -- teenager Max, eccentric middle child Frankie, and spicy youngest daughter Duke -- in Los Angeles. She also helps to care for her mother, Phil, who lives across the street. In addition to looking after her family, Sam tries to earn a living in the difficult acting industry while having time to have fun with friends and, occasionally, get in some private time with potential mates. In addition to starring as Sam, Emmy winner Pamela Adlon is a co-creator of the comedy series, along with former "Lucky Louie" co-star Louis C.K.

I watched season 1 but haven't caught the season 2 premiere yet.

I LOVE Pamela Adlon (the voice of Bobby Hill, to some of you).

And Spinelli on Recess!

I liked season 1. Saw it on Hulu, so I'll probably have to wait for S2.

Now that I have Hulu I have watched 2 of the 4 seasons. Some of it I love, and some I don’t really care for.

The writer clearly doesn't "get" the show. It's not about liking the protagonist--she is clearly flawed, and that is what the show is about.

I love the episodes that I have managed to catch on tv but I don’t have Hulu so I can’t get caught up.

We don’t like this season. It’s way too emo for its own good.

Really enjoyed the first two seasons which were equal parts comedy and dramatic elements. It’s not a funny show anymore. Too bad.

Also, has Sam essentially become “not straight” on the show? Are we supposed to be questioning her sexual orientation? Her character no longer seems interested in men at all. I only ask because a lot of the comedic aspects in the show were driven by her dating foibles. Now that material is gone, it seems that basically we a holed up in the house with her kids (a very timely parallel story line!)

Also, what happened to her diverse roster of good friends? They all seem to have been written off the show. It’s weird that the show suddenly has new, random friends introduced. It sort of feels like forced diversity for diversity’s sake.

Anyways, the show seems to be lost from a plot and character perspective. That’s on the writing team. We will finish out this season and probably not come back.

This season and last are lost and genuinely aimless rather than brilliantly pretending to be so. Its because Louis CK no longer a part of it...

I thought it was okay for a long time but it lost steam and then it was like her annoying voice was the only thing propping up her character.

PP again -- I don't mean "okay" -- I mean, I really loved the show for a while before it ran out of steam.

That may be the sad truth.

Does it really rain that much in LA?

Love this show.

With regards to rain in LA. We go through periods of heavy rain that can last for a full week (usually Dec-March), followed by months of zero rain.

No, it doesn't rain that much. It's a silly allegory. *yawn*
