Anyone know families OBSESSED with getting into UVA, period?

Anonymous
As in, UVA is their end all be all, it's all they've ever wanted, the kids are all brainwashed fanatics. It's a great school but isn't this a bit narrowminded?

Dd got into Northwestern or Cornell last year and I recall a UVA obsessed mother up at the school chomping at the bit to tell me her daughter got into UVA -- so she asked me dd's plans first. It was like Northwestern and Cornell didn't even register and she quickly came over the top with "dd is going to VIRGINIA."

I'm not judging, I'm just trying to understand the ethos which creates that fixation and holds it in such high esteem. To these families is there an aversion to going out of state, are the Ivys or Northwester, etc. even on their radar AT ALL?

I think it's weird that you expected her to be more impressed with your child getting into Northwestern and Cornell. That's a great accomplishment by your child, but so is her child getting into UVa so I'm not sure what relevance your child's admissions has to her excitement over her child's admission.

Ummm, compare the cost of attendance for UVA to Northwestern or Ivies and then get back to me.

My dd got into uva too -- I didn't feel the need to mention every college she was accepted to. But it's funny because I didn't mention it, she clearly took it as my daughter must not have gotten into uva. These UVa obsessed families are in their own world.

+1 how is it possible for someone to be so sheltered and tone-deaf?

It really is all about the cost. I know lots of people in NOVA absolutely OBSESSED with UVA but I guarantee you, if all colleges cost the same, they would not be.

Op, you are a bitch. She probably didn't care you kid got into Cornell. Get over yourself.

That is very strange, OP. I'm not surprised though. UVA has a cult-like following here in Northern VA. Scary.

So you mentioned the ones you thought she'd be most impressed by, and now you're annoyed that she wasn't more impressed by your child than by her own.

Wow, speak about yourself. Why are you so defensive? I totally get what OP is talking about. Her dd got into better schools, more prestigious, higher ranked, and more selective schools that are harder to get into. I don't think it would be inaccurate to say (generally) that Northwestern & Cornell are better, higher ranked, more selective & harder to get into than UVa. I read an article where a Dean at UVa came right out and said so himself that their admissions is no where selective as the ivies and schools ranked around there, especially for instate kids. At the same time, I do think it's odd that OP didn't realize it's probably because of the cost. OP must just be really wealthy.

Even if that's OP's thinking, it's incredibly snobby. Getting into any of those schools is a great accomplishment. OP can be proud of her child without trying to tear down someone else's pride in their own child.

But they don't, so no, you can't guarantee it.

I've met people like that about a lot of schools, UVA included.

Why do you feel the need to share this NOW, months after it happened?

Every state has people who feel this way about their state flagship.

Let it go already. UVA is a fine school. So are a lot of others.
