August birthday party

Anonymous
My son will turn 4 in August and I'd like to have a party this year with preschool friends. Last year it was over 100 degrees on the day. Any August bday moms have suggestions? I have a small house and with 20 kids invited (I figure I'll just invite the whole class) it could be cramped. We just moved so I don't know if we can join the neighborhood pool this year (probably not.) Thanks for any suggestions!

My sister started having her son's birthday parties on his half-birthday. It is much cooler, and scool is still in session.

I agree with PP. Our child has an August birthday as well. All the friends / classmates are typically on vacation. We're moving toward having half-birthdays (for the party, at least) and just having an "immediate family" celebration (with just cake and ice cream) on the actual birthday.

I don't know where you live - but in Virginia, there are several community centers that will rent rooms for birthday parties. I believe Lee Center in Alexandria even has a soft-room to rent for a nominal fee where little ones can jump around and play.

I would call The Great Zucchini at (202)271-3108) I had him for my 4 year old and I have never seen kids laugh this hard. I dont have a big house but he was very accomodating with the space.

I second the Great zucchini. The best I have ever seen with kids.

How about Cub Run Rec Center in Chantilly? Indoor water fun when it's hot outside! I haven't done it, but I assume the have a party room or something.

OP here. Thanks so much for responses. We're in Mont. Co., North Bethesda area. The half bday is not a bad idea, but my son is nattering away about his bday party in August even though it's only Feb. So I will try to go for the Aug. thing this year. I'm checking out the VA locations to get ideas, but anybody know an August bday spot in Mont. Co.? Thanks a bunch!

Why not just tell the kids to wear their swimsuits and set up a bunch of water toys (slip-n-slide), baby pool, etc in the yard. You can even set up a big tent in the yard to provide some shade if necessary.

I agree with 20:14 post, although 20 kids(!) sounds like a lot for a 4 year old party. I've got 3 kids all with summer birthdays - July and August - and we always did water parties when they were younger. Lots of fun, eat outside, etc.

My Gym does a great birthday party, esp for a child that age.
