Where to live if you want to catch a train to NYC?

Anonymous
I'm considering moving and have very little parameters on where to. I am interested in finding a nice place to live outside of NYC, where I could easily take a train if I wanted to go to the city on the weekends. Any advice or experience? Work is not a factor.

Yuck, who would want to live in NJ? By choice?

Obviously you've never been there. They actually have cute towns, and many are a lot nicer than CC or Bethesda.

I'd recommend Summit, Chatham Glen Ridge or Ridgewood.

I've been to all of the above, yes. And would never want to live in NJ.

Totally depends on budget.

so many factors go into deciding which town is right for you. can you tell us some other things that are important to you in a town/community? or give some other parameters.

I just moved to Darien, CT and i love it so far (I've only been here a month)

I grew up in Old Greenwich Ct. Its near the beach, has a small town feel but is wealthy and is about 35 mins to Grand Central station.

Variations on that include Riverside, Cos Cob and Greenwich (slightly more urban but not really).

I agree I would NEVER want to live in New Jersey. Growing up we accidentally went over there once on the wrong bridge into Manhattan and that was enough for me...

Elizabeth!

When WaPo ran the story on the town they considered the Armpit of America (Battle Mountain Nevada won), Elizabeth was on the list of contenders. Housing is super reasonable!!

You gotta have some parameters - the options are very broad. I'm stuck in DC but I still like reading the "Living In" column in the NYTimes real estate section. It always gives information on the demographics and culture of places in and around the city, home prices, length and cost of commutes to midtown, school quality, etc.
