Wilson schedule craziness AGAIN!

Anonymous
Why does Wilson always have such a chaotic start to the school year with student schedules messed up as usual? My 9th grader got none of the electives she picked and the counseling office is crazy busy and no one will see her. There is only 1 counselor for all of 9th grade. My 10th grader has 3 classes with 35 kids in them. She also heard that some kids could not get into Spanish because it was completely full. The overcrowding and budget cuts are a bad combination. What exactly is wrong with DCPS for creating and maintaining this untenable situation?

It isn't just Wilson. Lots of issues at Ellington too.

That is beyond frustrating.

Just think how well organized and relaxing ANY college will be after Wilson!

Why is Duke Ellington having similar scheduling issues? Isn't it less than 400 students? Shouldn't be that hard to figure out.
Wilson is unfortunately a mess but compared to most other DC schools is a shining star - very sad.
Any info on scheduling at SWWs?

Ellington has 500 students and of course fewer counselors than Wilson. Examples of issues include over-subscribed classes, students wanting to change things and difficulty connecting with teachers to approve over-enrollment or access to an upper level class. In their case the move was an added hassle as everyone had to be offline for a few days last week.

This! And I have a senior at Wilson.

No surprises here. The city lavishes hundreds of millions of dollars on beautifying high schools like Dunbar and Coolidge that are mostly empty, and Ellington, which serves few students. Meanwhile the one large neighborhood school that's in high demand--Wilson--lacks the resources it needs to run smoothly, and that's putting it mildly.

Stop the madness.

How about a permitted March to or outside the Wilson building on this and youth violence? Take back our school and streets?

You would look silly marching bc of schedule snafus. DC just put a record amount of money into schools. If you want more counselors, work with the LSAT to cut something else. But Wilson lost staff bc the schools are indeed becoming more IB / less needy.

The violence is worth a protest.

Ellington's building is stunning, but how stupid can they be to realize that it is the quality of the program and how it runs that is more important than the building? Maybe should have budgeted better and put some city money elsewhere.

I hope all of the MD and VA students who attend appreciate our tax dollars.

Not when you account for inflation, it didn't, and the Council had to add money when Bowser's initial budget underfunded the schools. Wilson's budget and staffing have been slashed repeatedly.
