Wilson schedule craziness AGAIN!

This is more or less how my entire high school, college and grad school experience was. No big deal. Things will work out.

Agreed. My child (a junior at Wilson) can't wait.

I still can't believe that the Wilson principal fired the most helpful counselor at the end of last year. What was she thinking?

She was thinking that she had a limited budget for counselors and one had to go. Blame DCPS Central.

In that kind of system, the kids who have no issues and are independent make it work, because they don't really need the counselor or special services.

Unfortunately, the ones with special needs or the ones who encounter problems have no one to turn to, and they get the short end of the stick.

So far so good at School without Walls. Seems calm and well organized for my 9th grader.

Same in 10th, schedule is what it was said to be, despite disclaimers. My son got most if not all of his first picks. But I do think handling is 300 vs 1500 students is a whole different ballgame, not times 5 but more like times 10. There are many more choices to get in alignment not only with preferences but also with grad requirements.

How many counselors are there for each of the 4 grades at Walls? Wilson now has one counselor each for grades 9-11, and two for grade 12. According to the summer mailing we got, Wilson has a total of 7 ATTENDANCE counselors (people who track absences) but only 5 total academic counselors. Seems like that ratio really has it backwards.

Isn't there a computer program for scheduling that can help? My freshman is in a class freshman aren't allowed to take. Couldn't a computer not place him in that class?

No she had a limited budget. She chose to cut the counseling staff. From what I understand, she did have some leeway about where the cuts were to take place.

Given past scheduling problems and the huge lines outside the counselor's offices every year, that is an inexplicable decision.

Parent of Wilson student. My DC's schedule was fine, and they are used to the kinks at Wilson and working them out.

The issue I see is i don't get any impression from the principal that she fights to get funding restored so DCPS just keeps slashing the funding. If this is not correct, and she's really going to bat for the school, she does a poor job of communicating that information.

Unfortunately with the Chancellor's hyper focus on equity, we can expect more cuts to Wilson funding.
They keep thinking that if they pour more and more money into low performing schools, it will make a difference without any regard to how much money is already being wasted in the system. Wilson is still known as an upper NW elite school even though it probably has 600+ FARMS students (more than the entire population of some other schools).

In what strange world does "equity" mean Wilson gets less?
