Important info:
SAT scores: Only taken once, will take again this fall, but 740 verbal and 600 math (we think he could do much better on the math the second time.) GPA 3.0 Extra curriculars: nothing special--for example he has been in his school orchestra all 4 years, but he is not first chair or a member of the "all district" orchestra or anything. Eagle Scout Wants to major in engineering. Looking for a smaller school (maybe 6,000 undergrads?) that is NOT in a major city like NYC, Chicago, etc. Would prefer a "college town." We visited West Virginia University and he liked it a lot, but it is a huge school so he would like to visit a few smaller schools to see how they are too. Any thoughts? |

Was his high school in an affluent area or not?
anyway: RIT? Wentworth? |

University of Delaware, Iowa State University
What APs has he taken and will take senior year? I am curious why he is looking at Engineering when he scored 140 points higher on the verbal portion of the SAT. |
No. I think it's about 75% FARMs and ESL. But we are not, if that makes a difference. |
OP again...RIT is Rochester Institute of Technology? Just wanted to make sure. Thank you!

| WVU has a great engineering program but it's fairly competitive. |
| One option to consider would be to start at a community college. My nephew did this for a year and ended up graduating with honors from a good state university (with several job offers at graduation). He needed a little more time to mature and establish a better GPA. |
| Pick up the Peterson's Guide or the Fiske Guide to colleges. Peterson's list 4000 colleges with description, cost, etc. Fiske has about 380 colleges but more indepth. You can probably get an older version at the library to peruse. |
| Consider also taking the ACT. DD had a 740 math, 670 English on the old SAT but a 34 on the ACT which is the score she submitted to colleges plus 2 SAT subject tests (math, foreign language). I truly believe the ACT secured spots that might not have occurred with the SAT but we'll never know. |

I've said this before on this board - University of North Florida is a hidden gem. It's a relatively small campus. Absolutely beautiful. It's in Jacksonville, but nowhere near the downtown area. It's located in a very safe area with restaurants and shopping closeby. It's about 20 minutes from the beach.

I was going to say - WVU engineering is very competitive. He probably wouldn't get in with that SAT math score and only a 3.0. |
|
Dickinson has a good program.

| What about Ohio University or Miami of Ohio? Obviously, I am from Ohio, so I know these schools... |
| Olin? |

Massachusetts Maritime Academy?
http://www.collegesimply.com/colleges/massachusetts/massachusetts-maritime-academy/ It's military-like, though. You don't have to go into the military, but many do. |
