Suggest a college for my son--please be kind-he's not looking for or eligible for elite or selective

What state are you in? What budget?
Beyond that, are you aware that despite all the bragging that you hear on DCUM 740 on SAT verbal is 98 percentile. That is above the average for even many very competitive schools. Given the disparity in his scores, what makes him want to be an engineer? It seems that his talents may lie elsewhere. I suspect there are plenty of very good (like state flagship or second level ) schools he could get into and succeed at.

THIS. This kid is going to get into college, no problem. OP said he's not looking at elite schools, and these SATs are very good. Honestly, sometimes DCUM is like an alien planet.

Agree with others that he's got a lot going for him! He should do some good math prep and take SAT again. Look for schools that superscore so that he can use that 780. Also, agree with others that he could work on those grades this fall and get that GPA up, and that the orchestra could be a hook (ask your orchestra director ASAP if they have any suggestions on this one....if you could videotape him playing a piece and put it on youtube, this could be part of his application no matter what).

Also look at the following:

Good luck, OP.

Look at Ohio university in athens, ohio. Pretty town, pretty campus. Lots of one on one with faculty.
