Most HS don’t have open lunch. Students can eat other places than the cafeteria but no one is leaving campus. So, my expectation would be that if a school is allowing open lunch, the onus is on the student to still be within the cell phone ban. Either order before the start of school with pickup at lunch time, or wait until you exited the school doors and start ordering. They don’t get a pass from the rules because they have a privilege that most don’t. |
I think you should homeschool. -dp |
I’m hoping they confiscate 100%. People being upset about it at the start of the year will curb the behavior for lots of kids/families for the remainder of the year. Everyone already received the warning by being made aware of the rules and consequences. |
You’re just truly the saddest person to ever be on dcum. You think every single comment you make is some sort of clever, “gotcha” to justify that you can’t handle not being in contact with your kids 24/7. Cut the cord and get some therapy for the sake of your kids. |
My kids have been told that one of the main reasons for the phone ban in their school is to stop groups gathering in the bathrooms to vape. |
Staff does not have the time/energy for that...if you want them to teach as well. |
And yet they haven’t been able to successfully teach because they are spending so much time throughout the year reiterating and reteaching things because of kids on phones not paying attention. Not to mention the behavior issues and social problems. So everyone can come with the time/energy in Aug/Sept needed to curb a large problem or deal with it all year. |
This is it in a nutshell. Set plans before school and send them on their way to learn. And I would tell them if I have to come in to retrieve your phone from the office, you lose XYZ privileges for ABC amount of time and hold firm. We all managed perfectly fine without them in school and so can your darlings. Be proactive and help these teachers and honestly really the teens. They need to learn to be off screens, they need to learn eye contact, engage for longer periods, and socialize. We are raising a bunch of introverts with learning and social disabilities and it's our fault. |
Lets see.... what is the options here...skip lunch...eat grass...PACK A LUNCH!! |
We had pay phones to call our parents. |
It has only been 3 days- but my DD in MCPS HS - freshman, says that every class they have to put their phones in the cell cojines cubbies hanging on the door. Some teachers are also checking the cubbies while doing the attendance- so if u phone is not in- they remind you to put it in. I am so glad they are doing this! |
You know what, my high schooler forgot his phone one day. That same day his schedule got messed up and he wasn’t able to get the bus home as normal. Guess what happened???? Do you think he’s still there unable to get home? He was able to resolve it very quickly. He found a phone to use. Your kid can do that too and he could do it in the future if necessary. These kids are not infants. They actually know how to problem solve! |
According to my DD, this year the teachers are regularly taking phones away when they see them out. I don't think it's that hard to do. |
Love it! Which school? |
You mean another child’s phone. Nope. You sound entitled. Why is your kid taking a phone to school if you are ranting about phone use? |
