Luteal phase defect

Anonymous
I just started charting BBT, and discovered that my luteal phase is only 6 days long (8, if going on cervical fluid indicators instead of BBT). I'm 38, but just starting TTC.

What can I do to lengthen it? I'm doing pre-natal vitamins already, but I just ordered some B-complex vitamins cause I read somewhere that it can help. Also, my doctor found that I have very low vitamin D. I'm wondering if that can affect it? I'm taking supplements for that, too.

I haven't told a doctor yet about my short luteal phase because I just found out today. (First cycle of charting). Should I wait and see a few more cycles? Do I call an RE tomorrow?

DH and I discussed it, and we're kind of in the mind that "whatever happens, happens" We don't want to go through IVF or anything... But, should I be more proactive in seeing a fertility specialist sooner rather than later?

Vitamin B worked for me. But I was nursing my ds at the time, so I knew why it was happening. If you don't have an obvious cause like nursing, I'd ask the dr to look into it and make sure you don't have a hormonal issue going on.

I was able to correct this with 1 cycle of clomid. It was an easy fix once the dr confirmed this was the problem.

I've seen the vitamin b recommendation on here before. Do you have any references or citations for where this suggestion comes from?

I have a short luteal phase as well. What finally worked for us was a single IUI procedure - basically a trigger shot to ovulate earlier than you otherwise would and then a medical "turkey baster" of the good stuff. I wish I'd tried it way earlier than I did.

I had weird length luteal phases, they were all over, timewise. I charted for four months (started that after four months of trying to get pregnant) and then talked to my ob/gyn. Started clomid, got pregnant first round.

Not sure what to take naturally, but I'd suggest talking to the doc now. Mine said that given the issues I was seeing (with luteal phase) that I didn't need to wait as long as I had to talk to them.

I have a short LP as well and I tried B complex and acupuncture but neither really solved the problem. I now use progesterone after ovulation which helps significantly and I went from an 8/9 day LP to 12. Worth asking your OB to test your progesterone after ovulation if they will. I have other issues and see an RE.

those of you who have fixed it, how did you cycles change? did your cycles stay the same overall length but O day came sooner?

Vitamin b for three months and then progesterone as soon as you get your bfp. This is what finally worked for me after years of ttc and a couple miscarriages.

I took vitamin d in addition to this, forgot to mention.

High prolactin caused this for me. Have that tested.

This is exactly the reason I took 1 cycle of clomid, not even a full dose of it according to my doctor, and ended up pregnant with triplets at age 31. It's powerful stuff. I know we just got "lucky" but I'd definitely try all of the other available options before resorting to it.
