It’s kind of cruel to stick to that poster that Falls Church is closer to them than McLean when they are way closer (as is Marshall) than most of Forestville is to Langley. They obviously just want to stay zoned to their current schools like most people. McLean’s enrollment is coming down so the only real reason to move them is to try and justify all the money being poured into the FCHS expansion. |
Map won’t load on iPhone; probably created for android |
Nah. This is about FCPS having spent all that money on the Thru contract. If they back down from significant boundary changes now it will look like a waste of money. They’ve basically forced their own hand, and gerrymandered peninsulas like Timber Lane are low-hanging fruit. |
1. move western langley to herndon west of great falls
2. split western oakton between south lakes and fairfax 3. western madison oakton es area to oakton, wolf trap to langley, mclean islands to marshall 4. after centreville expansion move most of western fairfax hs island near willow springs to centreville 5. renovate chantilly by adding expansion where its modular is as well as a third floor and through filling in its second floor, bring capacity to 3500 6. Langley takes in far eastern part of south lakes attendance zone |
Or Option 4: move the apartment complex on the other side of 495 to Stenwood and Thoreau (maybe Madison too). Stenwood is practically across the street anyway. It’s always been strange that those kids were zoned to Shrevewood. |
Renovate Chantilly to 3500??? |
Yeah, no way that’s happening. |
Dunn Loring ES is supposed to open within 3 years of the first comprehensive review, which means the boundaries for Stenwood, Freedom Hill, and Shrevewood are going to change dramatically again. I suspect when those lines are redrawn, Stenwood will take Shrevewood outside of the Beltway, but it doesn’t currently have the capacity. It’s better to adjust boundaries once when the new school opens than to shuffle kids around for something that’s known to be temporary. |
These things aren’t mutually exclusive. It wasn’t until the latest set of Thru changes that they started moving McLean kids kids to Falls Church and Marshall kids to Madison (two schools that got additions). They needed a triggering event to do so, whether it was an attendance island at McLean or overcrowding at Kilmer, but it was clear they’d gotten a message to start moving kids to schools that had been expanded. They don’t have a trigger yet to move Langley kids to Herndon, but that’s probably a matter of time. |
West of Great Falls is Loudoun County. Marshall would hardly have room for both McLean islands just by giving up 50% of a medium-sized ES. And no one is expanding Chantilly to 3500. Etc. |
Option 4 is a no for now, but they generally won’t care as long as the kids at these schools who get moved are different. The kids who’ll get moved to Shrevewood soon won’t be the same ones who get moved to Stenwood when Dunn Loring opens. |
Also falls church hs and McLean hs are about equal apart from our community - in fact certain times of the day FCHS is about a minute more…again no real difference and kids across street going to mclean so bus already coming here. |
I feel like your community is going to get it from all sides. If you say you want to stay at McLean rather than Falls Church, some Falls Church parents will accuse you of disrespecting them. Some Marshall parents want you redistricted because otherwise FCPS is going to "bridge" your island to the main McLean area by redistricting them. And then some McLean parents won't mind if they move the poorest kids at their school (not Poplar Heights, but those right off Route 29) elsewhere. They tout "One Fairfax" and then pit neighbor against neighbor. Remember that the next time Karl Frisch wants your vote. |
How about this? I realize it's too late...but tell SB and Thru they can't move any kids to worse-performing schools. There will still be folks upset about changes but far less. And it respects both students and property values. |
Never going to be policy or publicly acknowledged as an acceptable principle. |
