Craigslist ad - wwyd?

Anonymous
Our cat passed away recently and we are looking for another one (via rescue only) for the same breed. Looking for a kitten this time (for various reasons- we usually are good with any age).

Anyway, we responded to a CL ad for a kitten that had an "adoption fee." But the adoption group wasn't identified, which is odd. We contact the person in the local DMV area, but who actually is now in Bronx, NY. The person sent us a pic which was the mother of the kitten (second strike that this was not a rescue), the kitten is allegedly the last of the litter of the 14 mother, who recently passed. Ok, so, clearly not a rescue and why the hell are they breeding a 14 yo cat? Turns out the phone number is in FLA. The person wouldn't call us but wanted to text b/c they were "in a gathering." Was willing to ship the cat by pet courier, we declined.

We asked a few more questions, to which the person responded that "if you don't want the cat, why are you asking so many questions."

So, is this just an asshole breeder? Is there no cat and it's a scam? Should I report it?

Was the kitten in the photo with the "mother"?

Honestly, it makes me think of an article I read a few years ago about pedigree animals being stolen and sold on craigslist. I would report it.

This is a total money scam. There is no cat

Definitely a scam, and flag the ad - you can't sell pets for profit on CL.

I'm assuming it hasn't changed, but years ago you were supposed to request a fee for a pet, otherwise free dogs and cats were supposedly being taken for animal experiments or something.

Yes, report it, and just go to the pound.

1000% scam.

I looked for a small dog in rescue and on Craigslist for several months before I finally found a rescue that was willing to work with me and had what I wanted. In the meantime I stumbled on so many super sketchy Craigslist postings! I eventually got cold feet and gave up on CL, because I panicked that if I got the animal home and found it didn't get along with my other dog or child, I'd be screwed, stuck with a potentially dangerous critter. There was no way these sketchy people would take the animal back and/or return my money.

Hang in there! Keep checking Petfinder and Petharbor (searches a lot of shelters that aren't on Petfinder). You'll find a new baby!

"Adoption fee" just means money they want for giving you the pet. It does not have to signify that they are an adoption group. Anyone is entitled to use the term adoption.
Sometimes people want to be reimbursed for shots, etc. It's not a technical term when one adopts a pet. You can adopt a pet who wandered into your yard one day.

And OP, if you are only interesting in a purebred cat, don't kid yourself that you are "rescuing" a cat. Please. Give me a break. This is far from a rescue scenario.

You can ask for adoption fees or rehoming fees but breeders aren't allowed. It's hard to enforce and prone to BS distinctions, but this sounds like it falls into the prohibited category.

The pound or even PetSmart often has cats for adoption.

Adopt a rescue cat, there are a million sweet ones out there who need homes.

Lose the breed mentality.

And report that CL ad. I hate that Craigslist allows for pets to be listed - it is an invitation to abuse.

Just move on.
