Confederate: New HBO show where slavery still exists

Anonymous
The two white producers from game of thrones are going to be working on Confederate, which takes place in an alternate reality where slavery still exists. I find this appalling (whites female).

It is completely sickening. Tone deaf and privileged. I hope someone at HBO comes to their senses.

Is it based on the recent Pulitizer prize winning novel?

There was also a movie some years ago about this.

I'm AA and actually curious. They are partnering with people of color to pull this off (Nichelle Spellman) and I think the premise is interesting. I've been watching and loving the HandMaid's Tale so I think this could be thoughtful if done right.

And the fact that people are getting angry or upset by the idea, means the are on the right track IMO.

I've haven't seen anywhere that this show will be based on a book.

There's msern day slavery and human trafficking all over the world. It's sickening.

Don't need an hbo documentary to remind you of the world's reality.

Is this Underground Airlines? About a world now with slavery in it and a black bounty hunter who tracks down runaways? I heard about it on NPR.

It's absolutely chilling but why is something like this racist? It's not a proposal to have slavery. I'm sure it's not going to be so tone deaf as to show this alternate future as being "fun" and "great". I was not quite intrigued enough to go out and buy the book but of course there are tons of questions piqued- how do other countries react to us in this future? etc. If people on here read this or watch this show and there is an intelligent discussion, I would follow along and think that's a good thing.

It's not dissimilar in concept to Man In The High Castle.

Yes. I am the PP. Or Handmaid's tale. It's not sexist to make something like that. I mean, it's not a world we want. It's just provocative stuff.

"Confederate" chronicles the events leading to the Third American Civil War. The series takes place in an alternate timeline, where the southern states have successfully seceded from the Union, giving rise to a nation in which slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution. The story follows a broad swath of characters on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Demilitarized Zone -- freedom fighters, slave hunters, politicians, abolitionists, journalists, the executives of a slave-holding conglomerate and the families of people in their thrall."

Basically sounds like some bullshit to me.
Not interested.

Having a slave in modern times would be a pain in the ass. Everything is automated now. Why would anybody feed and house a stranger ?

Some day nobody will get an abortio n either .

We all are aslaves of the system.

They should make a show about corporate culture "everyone is disposable ", mortgages, healthcare and childcare lol:

I don't think it will be successful. While Dan and Dan are producers for the biggest tv show ever, it has gone significantly downhill when they went off book. All of the amazing dialog and storylines came directly from George R.R Martin.

This reminds me of the novel guns of the south by Mr. turtle dove

This is going to be awesome. Probably very politicized though.

I think this sounds like a really interesting concept and my GoT-watching husband, who loved The Man in the High Castle, is super excited about it.
