Field hockey

My ten year old daughter is interested in field hockey. She is just beginning.

Can someone give me a general summary of how it works in this area?

Best clubs? Are there tryouts? What age? Travel? Season?

Thanks!

If she's just beginning I would suggest either Koa or Next Level. Both have camps, clinics and teams. The teams can be just one season or all year and when she's ready she can try out for their club teams. There are more elite clubs but until she knows she wants to take it to the next step and commit more time I'd suggest those. My DD has done Koa for three years and loves it and does their year round development team because she plays club lacrosse and can't commit to another club sport. She enjoys the competition she gets at Koa without the commitment of club. They even do training over the summer to get you ready for high school tryouts.

Good luck!

Club sports aren't for beginners. Start with reddand clinics.

Rec and clinics. It is a fall sport so you may have missed sign ups. Usually registration is in the spring..

Thanks everyone. Other recs for a good clinic?

Where are you located? If near Bethesda-Potomac-Rockville then do Koa or Next Level. They even have two more weeks of Koa camp if she wants to try over the summer. My DD is helping as an assistant counselor and says it's well attended and the girls are learning a lot. Kelly Given, who runs Koa field hockey, is great. If you're in VA I know there are programs that the SSSA girls do, I'm just not as familiar.

Hi - Not sure where you are, but if you are in NoVA there are a number of good rec programs intended for beginners. In the fall, Burke Athletic Club, McLean Youth Field Hockey, and NoVA Extreme have rec programs, and Beyond Sticks offers developmental clinics at The Potomac School in McLean and St Stephens/St. Agnes in Alexandria. Out at the Dulles Sportsplex, Potomac Field Hockey offers a youth rec league that seems to feed into their club team. In the spring, FPYC also has an excellent rec league program.

Not sure about DC/MOCO, but I have heard good things about KOA.

Sorry, it's NoVA Xtreme

My DD has been doing both Next Level and Beyond Sticks for about three years and loves both. She has only done their clinics and camps, as she's on a club lacrosse team and I would not permit her to do two teams--but she has learned a lot and I think is ready to do well as she enters 7th grade and plays for her school team.

Do girls usually do both lacrosse and field hockey in high school or do schedules not permit?

At the private girl high schools, is it a legit tryout system or do clubs feed into them?

Oh My God, I suspect you have been eaither talking to a Visi parent or reading the Visi lacrosse thread.

NO CLUB TEAMS FEED HIGHSCHOOL TEAMS. It just doesnt work that way. In fact, if there were any connection its the opposite, schools feed clubs.

Some girls do both, some do lacrosse and soceer or lacrosse and tennis. Depends on the kid but at privates all students have to play a sport each season so its something each season.

oh, and, the best players make the team. Schools want and need their teams to win just as much as clubs do. No team, school or club, takes a kid who isnt good enough.

OP -- glad your girl is starting young. Mine started at age 6 and dh had to drive her to PA back then. Glad to see more programs in this area. To the poster below, yes, girls do both lax and fh. I know girls recruited to DI for both. My dd was recruited to Ivies for both crew and fh. She chose crew at Princeton. The tryout system is legit at the privates.
