Thanks so much. I realize looking at my post above, which was accidentally included in the quote--sorry about that--also made it sound like she was into field hockey without actually having played it. She has been taking clinics and camps for years, but has never played on a team. Do you know anything about Storm (affiliated with Beyond Sticks)? I just can't fathom having her play for the Wolves. There is no way we're going to College Park for practices and PA most Sundays. Anyway, thanks for the feedback and congratulations to your daughter!

Beyond Sticks and then Storm are two good options. The head of Storm is one of the best and most encouraging coaches in this area -- truly a wonderful woman who loves the game and can work with kids at every level from trying to get better for the HS team, to DIII prospect, to DI prospect. She won a major coaching award for positive coaching a few years ago.

Good luck -- field hockey is incredibly fun to play (even if tough to understand the rules from a spectator standpoint) and many kids from this area do have opportunities to play in college. (A nice option these days is club field hockey at the college level for those at a big school who want to keep playing but are not at the Division I level.). Even without college FH as a goal, most (but not all) of the area schools have teams and it's a great sport to be part of.

LOL. How true! Four years as a very interested bystander and I am still clueless!

Playing for a team like the Wolves, Freedom or Spark are what helps the girls get recognized. Many of the even U14 girls at the mentioned clubs have already been approached by colleges. Our DD has played for 2 of the teams, and also plays club Lacrosse. It is a commitment, but does open doors for the future.

Do the Washington Wolves have a U14 team? I see they have some U14 players but not enough to form a U14 team? If not, what gives?

they have a U14, but many of their players just aged up to U16. So they are about to have tryouts for more to come in.

Thanks for all the info. What about club travel teams for middle school girls?

Still in the DC area, Middle School and HIgh School, your best option is the Washington Wolves.

Another club team in MoCo are the Jackals (sister this club to MC Lacrosse) They already had tryouts but it wouldn't hurt to email them to ask if there are any more slots. They practice at Stone Ridge.

Some coaches are great at KOA and some are not. Lots of yelling with minimal skill building. Depends on who you get.

When will they announce when their tryouts are?

How is the coaching at Next Level? Welma Black is a great athlete. C

Thanks - where do you see this info? I didn't see anything about it on their website (still advertising last year's tryouts) or FB.

How tall do you think your daughter will be? Because the sticks are all the same size, and pretty darn short. My DD is a very strong athlete - great at anything that involves a stick and a ball or puck and was wonderful at field hockey (varsity letter in 9th grade at a top private school, first time she tried it) but quit, because she is 5'8" and field hockey basically means that she has to run in a squat position the entire game ... a pretty brutal exercise. I just googled average height of women's field hockey players and it came up with 5'4". If you DD is going to be 5'8" or taller - pick another sport - real hockey, volleyball, lacrosse, softball, etc.
