Wow. Do you have any idea how obnoxious this sounds? First, there’s nothing wrong with Timber Lane, and it doesn’t need to be “fixed”. Second, you’re being re-zoned because Thru’s plans prioiritize proximity, not equity. LJMS and FCHS are your closest schools. |
Who did a better job, this FCPS student or Thru:

Poplar Heights and Donna Lee Gardens should be lobbying to move to Shrevewood in place of the apartments off Hollywood Rd. This would eliminate the risk of Shrevewood becoming an over capacity Title I school. They’d also be guaranteed their consolation pyramid (Kilmer/Marshall) and they’d physically share a border with the McLean HS boundary should the Shrevewood split feeder proposal stick. |
I think the problem is more they did not kick and scream so Thru just moved them wherever. Or more likely Thru just doesn’t understand the neighborhood and how little it makes sense. |
Considering Marshall isn’t on any of these maps, I’d say this student did pretty poorly. |
I don’t know if the comment tool on the interactive map will be used at all, but I’ve highlighted the island to point out the imbalance between Graham Road and Westlawn capacity as well as the physical boundary across RT-50. |
FCPS has done an incredibly poor job with the whole unnecessary thing, but, while I appreciate the thought exercise of the complete nuclear review (and hope this kid gets an A in her class for the effort), it’s just not possible to start from anew without decimating the Fairfax County membership and rolls. It’d be the fury now times ten. |
Maybe the student accounted for that a different use of Marshall in the future? Who knows? The project might be quite forward thinking, such as Marshall being converted to the Scott Surovell Center for Casino Employee Training. You know, taking into account the true priorities of our local politicians. Might be prescient. |
Marshall is on the map. Its region appears in light blue. Regardless, the map is even less sensical than the Thru model. There’s a piece assigned to Fairfax HS from south of Burke. And Oak Hill is a web of some streets go her and some streets go there. |
The map isn’t realistic for a lot of reasons, but I’m guessing this is an academic exercise and for that, she seems to have done a good job with the parameters for the mapping tool. |
Shrevewood parents crap all over their current poor kids (off Route 29 and outside the Beltway) so they probably aren't going to be very nice to the kids west of Hollywood Road, either. They want so bad to be Haycock South and instead the school is turning into Timber Lane West. |
Fairly certain they didn’t take into account capacity at any school. Some look wildly over capacity now and others waaaaaay under. Sloppy |
Zoom to Shrevewood boundary map at street level. https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/boundary-maps/Shrevewood_ES_2.pdf Could some of current in boundary for Timber Lane be Shrevewood walk zone? If Shrevewood Tower St walks so would adjacent Timber Lane streets. Thru's Timber Lane: -119 to Shrevewood on a bus 377 other Mclean island -144 new Graham Rd +254 from current Graham Rd + 72 from current Pine Spring [over capacity] Thru ignored walk zones in it's drafts [Westgate. Marshall mean at least 5 new bus runs]. |
Good effort, but I do see some problems--similar to THRU. Splits my neighborhood and elementary school cohort. Question: did student base the new boundary suggestion on projected enrollment? It switches a lot of neighborhoods in my area pretty dramatically and I'm not sure the distance correlates with time/traffic. Did student also do elementary schools and middle schools? |
My take is this is Reid trolling under the cover of promoting student work. It’s in her weekly reflections right after the latest on upcoming boundary review feedback sessions. You can almost hear her saying “even our students see the issue on the Loudoun County border.” Using student work to troll the people who pay her $500k a year to wreck their kids’ education. The arrogance and condescension is a bit much sometimes. |
