Do residents of the west side of Montgomery County really believe

Anonymous
that eastern MC is populated by thugs? I read through some of the discussions on the Public School forum and am flabbergasted. Do residents of Bethesda/Potomac/Chevy Chase really believe that the students at the schools in Silver Spring are all low-income, struggling, and at the mercy of wandering gangs?

I know this post sounds tongue-in-cheek, but I swear it isn't. I am just flabbergasted by some of the assumptions and have a hard time wrapping my mind around these perceptions, knowing what I know firsthand about Silver Spring (as a great place to live).

yes they do.

They do. And they want to justify spending 50%-100% more for their house.

No, I don't , but the schools are objectively better over here.

i have to be honest though. i'm from silver spring, grew up there, etc. if i could afford to live in bethesda or chevy chase, i'd pick it in a heartbeat over silver spring.

I live in Chevy Chase, Md.
I certainly don't think that all the Easterners are thugs. Many of them are good, honest people - just like the people in the West, but with less money. They are a cut above the rabble in PG County, and have a more touching naivity and simplicity than people in the District.

I find Bethesda utterly charmless after working there a number of years.

Potomac and Chevy Chase seem nice. We like Silver Spring - great commute for where we work and excellent elementary school, walking distance to red line is key, and we bought here in our late 20s - first home - so I'm not holding us to too high a standard yet.

Much as I love the area and working in DC, I think in ten more years I will just be tired and want to move on, so we will likely be able to afford a bigger, nicer home in a nice neighborhood in the smaller cities we are considering moving in or near.

Are you serious? "Cut above" the "rabble" in PG County?

Naivity (sic) - I think you mean naivete? Simplicity?

This post is a riot. Have you ever actually *talked* to people who live in Silver Spring?

I live in South Arlington and the same thing holds true for us. Many people who live in N. Arlington think we live in a ghetto.... It's ignorant and sad. So, I completely see where you're coming from.

I bet my house in Gaithersburg cost more and is nicer than your house in Chevy Chase, and I bet my Quince Orchard teen is getting a better education than those teens at BCC.

Of course I have *talked* to people who live in Silver Spring. Our nanny, gardener, and the nice Korean lady who does my toes all live in Silver Spring, so I am well aware of both its virtues (e.g. close-knit, ethnic foodstuffs and plentiful help) and drawbacks (low quality housing stock, poor selection of bottled waters in the stores, some uncouth and ill-mannered residents). As for PG County, I admit I don't know it well, but the people on the television are always raising issues of crime, poverty, ignorance etc.

Such funny satire.

I doubt very much a vulgar McMansion can compare with the well-appointed houses in the established neighbourhoods of Chevy Chase, even if it came with an outside hot tub with TV and a 4-car garage. I have never heard of Quince Orchard, but I admit it does sound delightful, and your "teen" will have the advantage that none of the admissions staff at Harvard or Yale will have come across the school before.

Not quite but good try.
