How many houses are on your block? If there are twenty then one house with a Black family, and one house with an Asian family, really isn't' diverse.

It's indisputable that Bethesda is mostly white. That's why I wrote "the vast -- VAST -- majority of people here are white." But the OP said she spent the entire day in downtown Bethesda and didn't see anyone that wasn't white. As someone who lives in Bethesda, I think that is

Read the original post again. "But the OP said she spent the entire day in downtown Bethesda and didn't see anyone that wasn't white." isn't a true statement.

OK, the original post said "We were downtown (for hours) and only saw one Asian man and one Asian woman, who were not together." I forgot about the two asians OP mentions. I sill say, this is bullshit.

I can't speak for everyone else in Bethesda, but after growing up in 'bland' Bethesda, I always said the only suburb of dc I ever wanted to live in was Takoma Park. I did live in Takoma Park -- a really shitty part, not the cute or charming part (which still has crime even though it's cute...) because I was broke and took what I could afford. I saw a teenager get the crap kicked out of him lying on the street right in front of our house while I was holding my toddler; I waited for the police to arrive while one woman held another woman at knife point kitty-corner across the street (in the front yard of some kind of half way or rehab house); I pretended nothing was happening while my DC and I walked past a policeman who drew his gun and pointed it at a group of fist-fighting teenage girls five feet away from us on our way to the crunchy-granola co-op; my next door neighbor's basement unit was robbed twice.....As a single mother, sorry, it was not what I wanted for myself or for my DC. I moved to a super cheap house in Bethesda and although sometimes cars get broken into (or so I'm told), there is just NO comparison to the level of safety here. None. I am thankful every day that as a single mother, I am living somewhere safe. Diversity or lack of diversity takes a back seat for me at this point.

That is true, and there were a few violent muggings a few years back. And there have been robberies in and near the main parking garage in downtown. Bethesda.
I live in CC and have often wondered why there is not more crime, as John Dillinger said, he robbed banks because that is where the money is . . .

PP, what is your point? The other thread asked how anyone could justify living in Bethesda. I explained why i was happy living there. If you have no experience with Takoma Park, then maybe you should stop feeding stupid stereotypes of what happens where.

Not to mention the Whitman kids that robbed one of our stores in Bethesda. And these were considered good kids.

I'm not here to fight the diversity battle -- I frankly don't care. However, I can't resist your Takoma story. You must've lived in a really shitty part, because you encountered more crime (in one afternoon?) than I encountered living there for 10 years! Mazel tov!

You got me, I just made it all up. We all know Takoma Park is too groovy for any of the crime I wrote. (Kidding. The crimes I witnessed took place over the course of a year, you dunce, not an afternoon.)

Yes, as I said it was not the nice part of Takoma Park. I seriously doubt you have lived in takoma Park for ten years if you think there is no crime there. Maybe you should join a neighborhood listerv if you don't ever leave your house.

I certainly don't think that all the Easterners are thugs. Many of them are good, honest people - just like the people in the West, but with less money. They are a cut above the rabble in PG County, and have a more touching naivity and simplicity than people in the District.

Are you serious? "Cut above" the "rabble" in PG County?

Naivity (sic) - I think you mean naivete? Simplicity?

This post is a riot. Have you ever actually *talked* to people who live in Silver Spring?

Slow down...the first post was obviously written by a troll.

Yes, I was defending my post which was taken from another thread, in which the OP asked how anyone could justify living in non-diverse Bethesda.

You know though, the same thing happened to me in Greenbelt last week. It seems you have gotten some of our tough PG county thugs running in your area now.

The point was, I had not heard of that much crime in Takoma Park and was surprised by description of events. In fact the folks I know who live in Takoma Park have not had any more problems with crime than people I know who live in Bethesda. I have no idea where the "bad part" of Takoma Park is. And I don't see how posting your post is feeding a stereotype, unless your post was not truthful. If it happened, it happened. Sorry, I assumed you were not lying.

All you have to do is join a Takoma Park listerve to find out how much crime there is there. But in my three years in Bethesda, I have seen first hand no crime whatsoever. I have heard of cars being broken into for their GPS devices but I don't know anyone myself who has had a car broken into. In my year in Takoma Park, I witnessed all of the crimes I mentioned. Make of that what you will, but I for one am very pleased and relieved that I live in a relatively crime-free area.

We currently live in downtown Silver Spring and commute to downtown Bethesda.

Bethesda = international community (French, Japanese, etc), good schools, safe, expensive, a few people over-moneyed for their I.Q.

Silver Spring = international community (but different provenance), bad schools, unsafe pockets (but getting better), cheaper, a few people vaguely acquainted with etiquette.

Pick your poison. Mine by choice would be Bethesda.

You know, when it comes to areas outside of the Beltway, I have to admit that I don't have much information, but what I have personally experienced has never made me think there are gangs and thugs waiting to rob me. When see a news report about gang activity in Silver Spring, I have now idea where in Silver Spring they are talking about because I only know downtown Silver Spring -- and have seen no thugs there. Takoma Park to me is where the farmer's market is -- once again no thugs present. Same with Kensington, I don't know in what part of Kensington there was a gang shooting at a high school not long ago because Kensington to me is where I eat dinner and brunch at Black's Market. Based on news reports, I guess there are problems in these areas, but I have never experienced it.

Jeez, do I have to go out to Clarksburg to find nice, normal, middle class folks? This thread paints an ugly picture of all of down county.
