| As soon as he hears me cleaning the litter box, my 6 month old cat comes running. As soon as I am done he immediately jumps in and pees, especially if I have added fresh litter. Drives me nuts as I am a bit obsessive about keeping our house free of animal odors. Does anyone else's cat do this? I am about to get him neutered, will that help? |
| OMG OP, why did you get a cat to begin with? They go when they have to go. |
| There are two issues at hand. Yes, you should get your cat neutered but, that might not change anything. Maybe your cat likes clean litter box? I love when I wash my sheets. The first night in them is the best! Cats are very neat. Just wait until he is finished then clean again. |

Our cats do that, too. (Both spayed/neutered.) I think it's funny - like they cannot abide a clean litterbox. Another interpretation is that they were waiting for the box to be cleaned to use it.
Clean it again after they use it. Prbly won't have to pee a second time right then. And try a different litterbox or litter if the smell is really bothering you. We use hooded, top entry boxes and I think they container the odor pretty well. |

Getting him neutered is not likely to help, but you should do it anyway.
He pees because he likes a clean litter box. Consider yourself lucky that he's not like my cat, who waits until the box is clean and then takes the biggest, smelliest poop he can manage right away. |
| Check out the tidy Cats Breeze litter box. I was able to convert my 10 year old cat to use it 3 years ago and it has been a game changer - far less odor and next to no tracking and the few pellets that do track are easy to pick up. |
Was going to mention this. This has been a complete game changer for us as well. If you change the pad at least weekly and scoop daily, the smell is really manageable. We sweep the small room where the box is once a day or so and that takes care of tracking. |
PP again. I replace the box once a year (wash it out completely every 4 weeks), just because plastic absorbs odor and the box really isn't very expensive. I just replaced it in May and they changed the design. The test with the grid is now a separate piece, much easier for washing. I have noticed the pads are FULL on Day 7, whereas with the old box they needed to be changed but could have gone an extra day if needed. I think the new shape of the tray is doing a better job funnelling pee out of the box. Thinking I may switch to changing the pad a bit more often. Also going to mention it to the vet and make sure it's not just my cat peeing more, but it coincided exactly with when I got the newest style box. |
LOL, My cat does this too. He was neutered a long time ago, so I don't think neutering will change it. I just wait for him and scoop again when he's done. |
| If it were my litter box I'd do the same as your cat. |
That's no different than my spouse who always uses the bathroom that's just been cleaned (we have 4 other bathrooms!) or cooks and leaves a mess on the stove range the day the cleaning lady comes (note, we don't cook every night). |
| My cat does this, too. In fact, as soon as I finish and leave the room, he is sitting right at the door waiting for me to complete my "maintenance job," |
| Growing up we had one (female) cat who did this. She could have gone 10 minutes ago, but as soon as that box was clean, she was in there to christen it. She was a great cat, and I miss her. |
| Sounds like a typical a-hole cat thing to do, kind of like knocking things off the counter or jumping onto whatever lap or surface he was just removed from. I like cats, but this is just the way they are. |
Other Breeze fan here. I replace both of our boxes once a year as well but haven't seen the new design yet. So it's now 4 pieces (rim, tray, frame and grid)? I haven't been in charge of cleaning ours since last fall because I'm pregnant. DH has been okay about changing things but not as diligent as I would have been. When I'm responsible for it, I basically change the pad every 4-5 days because I find that that's a better cycle for our cats. I think t depends on how many cats and how many boxes you have as well as the cats themselves. We have one old boy cat who pees a lot more than the other two for reasons that are apparently not medical, so if he is interested in one box more than the other, that one gets yucky faster. |
