| My son is taking RS 1 as rising freshman. Do we need to buy the text book or school gives? Could any one please share how the homework load, how often unit tests etc. if your son or daughter took it last year. |
| Did you find out? We are also taking summer RS1, don't know if we need to buy the text book. Please share if you know. Thanks a lot!! |
| There is a packet and practice test to review prior to class starting on Wednesday. The students have a test on Thursday. I have seen no mention of purchasing a textbook. This is HS. They provide that for the students. |
| Thanks for the information. |

TJ will provide the textbook/ materials-- although I think that it either is textbooks online or they use teacher prepared packets posted to blackboard.
There is a syllabus online that tells your kid what calculator to get and what to download programs the need to the calculator, how to get on blackboard, and units covered. Get on blackboard the the calculator ready before Wednesday. https://www.tjhsst.edu/summer-assignments/docs/2017/math/Cover%20Letter%20for%20Summer%20RS1%202017.docx There is also a 28 page packet that needs to be done before classWednesday, test Thursday. https://www.tjhsst.edu/summer-assignments/docs/2017/math/Summer%20Packet%20for%20SUMMER%20SEMESTER%20RS1.pdf Here are the answers packet: https://www.tjhsst.edu/summer-assignments/docs/2017/math/Summer%20Packet%20for%20SUMMER%20SEMESTER%20RS1.pdf Make sure your kid really, really understands the stats packet. They won't just test can they do the problems. The tests, including the first rest, will be real work, application, think outside the box. They say don't assume your kid is ready because the digested the study guide. Take them seriously. My kid did RS during the school, year, and it was same packet/ same drill. Lots of Cs and C- in the first test this Wednesday. And not a lot of time to pull the grade up on a compressed 5 week schedule. My kid did fine in RS, but has a tougher time in later math. Some kids say RS is the toughest math class they have. If your kid does not have an A, see what peer tutoring, teacher tutoring, test corrections and makeups for below an 80 on a test are available. (Usually only 1 retake per quarter, so probably 2 in summer school). Good Luck, and welcome to TJ! But, read the summer packet, welcome letter, info etc work for word and follow directions exactly. This is not MS, and there are not a lot of 2nd chances or room for "I didn't"t realize it was due, on the test, etc." |

Sorry-- lots of typos. Iphone. But you get the point
BTW-- based on about 6 tests a semester last year, I would expect 1 every 4 days or so. There was also a significant project, but not sure they can fit it in summer school. Also. The welcome sheet says it!s a Woodson. That's a typo from last year. All classes at TJ. |
| Thanks so much for the detailed information. We appreciate your kindness! |
| Is there an answer key for the test? DS said the answer key was only for the packet. |
| PP with the long answer, and I just realized RS is a semester, not a year class. So only 2 1/2 weeks. I cannot stress this enough. TJ math is nothing like MD math. Hit the group running, because there is no time in 13 class days to make up for a bad start. |

FWIW my TJ kid took Research Stats. It was very easy for him, but entered TJ taking Math 4 and 5 which kicked his butt. Be prepared. Also, another FWIW, evidently for my son taking RS was a mistake and he should have taken the History class in order to make his schedule work out. Too late now for him (and your kid) but be aware of the graduation requirements and how to fit them in. Good thing about taking any TJ summer school class before freshman year is that you get to meet kids so have a few friendly faces walking the halls.
And welcome - TJ can be great a great experience and I wish your kid all the best! |
| My son mentioned that everyone got less on the first test - one that was in the summer packet. Anyone knows if that will be the case for all the other quizzes too. |
| Anyone know if the RS project is group or individual? My kid told me that there would be a RS project during summer school |
School year project was not group. |
What do you mean? |
My son scored a 82 on the first test which was based on the summer packet. In another quiz on the first few topics on the first day, he did really well. Heard from some of the kids from last year, kids had similar experiences where the first summer packet test many scored less. so was wondering the intensity of the course and if there is they will curve the scores. |
