I've been hearing lots of chatter from my daughter, her friends and parents that it's getting surprisingly hard to get into University of Maryland, particularly this year. I've heard that magnet students aren't getting in, let alone the "regular" smart kids who take AP classes.
I have heard that it's been progressively hard to get into, but when I heard that magnet students didn't get in, I was sort of floored. Has anyone else heard anything like this? |
| Have you visited their website recently? It tells you what stats are required as minimum for entry. |
Yes, I've looked at the stats. But, these are kids who also did and expected to get in, but didn't. |
People say that every year. Yes it is harder than years ago but it's still much easier if you compare with the top tier schools. |
What do you mean they "expected" to get in?? |
Met or exceeded the stats, but didn't get in; went and did well at a magnet program and didn't get in, etc. |

OP - below is from UMD website. UMD's admit rate is still in mid-40% so it's not too difficult. UMD uses MCPS grading system so kids with wGPA of 4.2 are pretty decent students in MCPS, IMHO.
"For the Fall 2016 freshmen class, we received nearly 30,200 applications for a class of 4,075. For students admitted for the Fall 2016 semester, the middle 50% of SAT scores ranged from 1260 to 1420, and 29-33 on the ACT. As a result 25% of the admitted students scored below a 1260 on the SAT and 25% scored above a 1420. Admitted freshmen also earned an average weighted GPA of 4.21" |
| B+ student, sports, maybe a non-sports extracurricular. Nothing crazy. |
Those are the stats from last year. I was hoping to hear from other parents who have had kids apply and unexpectedly did not get in or who also have come across other kids who did not get in and who expected to. |
| I don't think 2017 stats are available yet. |
Again, not really so interested in the stats, but would love to hear from other parents who have been through/heard the same things. |
All the kids expected to get in, got in. At least DC's circle of magnet kids. |

When you say they expected to get in - did they apply early and have it as their first choice? Or did they have it as a safety?
There have been discussions on this board recently about how schools who assume the applicants are treating them as a safety are turning them down, in favor or more likely attendees. This is possibly something to do with it. |
Tuft Syndrome. UMD doesn't practice that. |
above 75% threshold on sat's? |
