Does anyone know here of any organizations that can help us find one on one aide for
Our preschooler? Someone here mentioned Little Leaves, but they only do ABA services for children diagnosed with autism. So no luck with them. Or it could be any websites. Please suggest. |
| You could hire a regular nanny and have her trained by an ABA service that you pay out of pocket. If we were in your shoes that's probably what we'd do. |
| Call Child Find. If your child needs a shadow to be at a regular preschool, it is best for them to find a preschool where they do not. For us, that was PEP. We did a shadow and it was incredibly restrictive, and my son actually shut down. Also, if you need a shadow in preK, the odds are that you're going to need an IEP and you should get that process started. |
| Thanks. We are looking for a shadow in a private preschool. Any suggestions? |
Yes, I assumed so. You don't need a shadow for PEP preschools, and you really should call Child Find. The chances that you're going to want an IEP are high. If you don't want to, not sure why, you should hire an ABA trained shadow. That is going to be pricey. Look on care.com, you should be able to find one for less than through an ABA company, or work with an ABA company and try to get a reduced rate - they will do it based on salary, etc. Where are you? We use Paving Pathways, and I know they do this. Our kid also does not have an ASD diagnosis. Needed a shadow, still needs an IEP. |
| Have you spoken to the preschool? Usually if a preschool allows shadows, they will have a some resources they can recommend. I would also look on care.com if you are looking for a nanny that could assist as well. Be careful when hiring someone, we needed a shadow for our child but hired an aba because we wanted someone who was trained to know when to assist and when to fade into the background. |
Thank you! We are in a similar place. No autism, but need a shadow. How was your experience working with paving pathways? Since you were not working with an autism diagnosis, did you get any coverage from the insurance? If you are comfortable, can you share how much it cost you? Thanks! |
|
People really shouldn't do a private preschool with a shadow. Just find a school that can handle your child. Or do aba at home and go to social events or do child find. The shadow is rarely successful.
If you don't have an asd diagnosis I don't believe any insurers will cover it. They're not required to. |
| Thanks for making a sweeping statement. |
| Do you have data that backs up your claims? Any research? Real data? Studies? |
You're welcome. Having btdt and talked to a ton of others in the same boat, I can tell you that this is a top along figuring pout that regular preschool is not appropriate for your child in about 90% of the cases. Needing a shadow is a one on one environment and is considered he most restrictive setting. You want your child in the least even if that's some blow to your belief that this is just a blip. Again, btdt. |
Yeah, this is ridiculous. You need research to show you that kids that need so much help they need a shadow likely need a different specialized school environment? |
Umm. Yes. Because what the county schools are doing is dumping kids who need extra support in the most restrictive environment. So how does that work? |
What are you talking about? The county preschools are inclusive half and half models. Some school districts don't even have self contained classes. |
| Not in FCPS |
