Rant: Sick Days

Anonymous
Why do people not realize that a sick day is meant to use for rest? Every job I've ever had, there is an expectation that you basically work from home on those days. It's so frustrating. And then they expect you to count it as a sick day!

What? Sick day for rest?

I had a boss who said if you are able to call in sick, you are able to come in.

I read something today about a boss getting offended because his team texts or emails when they are sick instead of calling. WTF is wrong with people? Who cares how tell someone you're sick?

NP here. When you are sick, you need to rest (not work) so you can get better. What do you not understand about that?

They are being sarcastic.

Who gets sick days? Our admin staff comes in to the office, even with pneumonia, so they won't lose one of their paid days off. I'd much rather they have a dedicated bucket of sick leave.

I have been at my job 14 years and I have taken 3 sick days. Do adults really get sick that often?

Some do. I think it's insane that someone would work with pneumonia!

It is against our policy to text or email because we work in a profession where finding coverage is necessary when someone calls out. It is not acceptable to send a quick text/email at the last minute (which is exactly what ends up happening if allowed).

Great for you but some of us have lives. We get sick, our children get sick, a car accident happens, obgyn appointment, holy shit allergies kicked in badly, slept with a random guy now need a hiv test... lots of things are covered under a sick day besides a "sniffle."

Yes. I teach pre-k. This last school year I was sick 5 different times. 5. I only called out for 4 of them, and not for long enough time. If I had more leave available (and no guilt) I would have taken more days each time I was out. This was an unusual year, a lot of teachers and children were also out. But yes people get sick, and when children and adults go to school sick, it's a cycle that never ends.

Since I've had kids, I end up using all my sick days plus some vacation time for illnesses. And that's even stretching leave by working at home for half a day when I can. It has sucked.

Certain people abuse sick leave. Good workers won't, but I've known people who called in sick frequently just because they didn't want to go to work.
